Kate won't open from Dolphin - Dolphin 5 Plasma 5.5

I’ve been experiencing problems opening Kate from within Dolphin. Kate is the default application I use for editing text files. When Dolphin is first opened, I can click on a text file and it will open with Kate. After opening several files, Kate will no longer open when I try to open a text file from within Dolphin. Kate appears on the taskbar, tries to open, but fails. At the same time, I can still open Kate from outside of Dolphin and I can open other programs, notably Kwrite, from within Dolphin. What seems to be happening, is that Kate does not close when I close the files I had previously opened from within Dolphin. The Systems Activity monitor will show several instances of Kate running, even though they appeared to close when I closed the files I was editing. If I terminate those instances of Kate from within the Systems Activity monitor, then I can open files with Kate from within Dolphin again – at least until the same thing happens over again.

This is a new problem. It did not happen in Plasma 5.4 or in 13.2 and previous incarnations of OpenSuse. I’m not sure if applications other than Kate have the same problem, but if they do, I haven’t experienced it. Is this a known bug? Any solutions?

Thanks.

Try closing from the File menu, Quit? Or try closing with Ctrl-Q?

For the meantime, might be a workaround?

But, as you alluded, probably a bug.

Same here, I can’t launch Kate from Dolphin or Folder View. You can open it from Kate Sessions in systray ok.

Kwrite opens fine tho.

The reason for this problem probably is that Kate doesn’t quit when you close its window at the moment. That’s a bug in Kate (and Ark as well), it didn’t occur with KDE Frameworks < 5.17 though, a bugfix there now triggers that problem.

It keeps running in the background without a window open, and maybe cannot be started again therefore because it is already running.

Will be fixed in KDE Applications 15.12.0 which will be released as official update for Leap 42.1. Or you can get it now from the KDE:Applications repo.
Selecting “Quit” in the menu (as Fraser_Bell suggested) should completely quit it too.

Thanks for the replies. I have been closing by selecting quit (when I remember). I’m glad to know the bug’s been fixed.

having the same issue and the bad part (for me) was after a reboot I ended up with dozens of kate windows that wore apparently hidden in the previous session, I’ll replace it with one from KDE:Applications.
