In Leap 16.0 there is no YaST and alsa is not installed by default, but apparently yast2 does not require alsa or the other way round (at least on Tumbleweed, where YaST still lives), so it is possible to (un-)install one or the other without problems.
In the (remote) past possibly yast2-sound required alsa, but that module is long gone, not needed anymore and likely not working anymore in current systems.
I installed alsa and it resolved the issue again. It also installed these packages, if it helps:
tree-2.3.2-1.1.x86_64
libdialog15-1.3-13.3.x86_64
dialog-1.3-13.3.x86_64
libatopology2-1.2.15.3-1.3.x86_64
alsa-ucm-conf-1.2.15.3-1.2.noarch
alsa-utils-1.2.15.2-1.4.x86_64
alsa-1.2.15.3-1.3.x86_64
interesting. That boggles the mind that I’m fine without alsa on all my hardware, but yours needs it.
Can you please file a bug report at https://kalpadesktop.org/bugreports
Yes, no problem, might be over the weekend though as I don’t have much time today/tomorrow.
Are you sure that these packages were all required, and not just alsa-ucm-conf as mentioned earlier?
I strongly second deano_ferrari’s opinion.

I’m not no, my knowledge of Linux audio systems isn’t particularly in depth.
I can roll back and try this, however my laptop suffered an unfortunate non Linux related event and it might be a while before it’s back in commission, I’ll see what I can do though.
Curiously, on my desktop, I also observed this “lack of audio until alsa was installed” when I deselected YAST.
