I’m running openSUSE 11.2 x64 here and after a recent update Kaffeine 1.0pre2 (and the KDE3 version) won’t run at all. Kaffeine attempts to start in the background but crashes after a short while. No error messages are produced when launched from a shell.
Does anyone else have this problem ? I thought it might be an issue with the Xine library but it seems ok.
To check the multimadia libraries, you can run, for example, smplayer.
Have you reinstalled kaffeine(s)?
SMPlayer works fine as it’s my default media player.
Re-installing Kaffeine (both versions) did’nt help.
I have seen a bug report about this problem when I did a google search. It’s a very frustrating problem as I use Kaffeine exclusively with my Digital TV tuner card.
There was another application, tvtime. Don’t know how it is now.
Have you looked at output of dmesg or it /var/log/messages ? I expect some messages about crash there.
What about kaffeine of other users?
Have you tried to delete ~/.kde4 ?
TVtime is analog only - no use to me as I have a digital TV tuner card. In any case, I’m using Me-TV (GTK) for now and it works ok.
There are no crash messages at all. This problem started when I upgraded to KDE 4.3.4 from 4.3.1 .
I don’t really use it but mine works fine, same version as you quote:

I don’t use kde3 stuff at all.

Kaffeine4 ran for a while for me but would not recognise the Kaffeine3 playlists; then it crashed several times but the bug reports had nothing useful in them; then it stopped running completely. So I uninstalled it and installed Kaffeine3 which is running fine; it also reads the playlists I created while running Kaffeine4.
I did a bit of digging and found that Kaffeine spits the following error message after a minute or so from the CLI:
"terminate called after throwing an instance of ‘std::bad_alloc’ "
and
“KCrash: Application ‘kaffeine’ crashing…”
This happened when running Kaffeine 1.0pre2-5.2
