Kaffeine and openSuSE 12.1

Hi,

First some specs:

System: “HP Pavilion p7-1225”
OS: openSuSE 12.1 x86_32
TV card: “Hauppauge WinTV-1800”
Video card: “AMD Radeon 6550D”
Sound card “HDA Intel compatible”

Well… After a long while, I was finally able to get Kaffeine digital TV working. Problem is, when I “scan channels” (within Kaffeine) it detects a bunch of “#0” channels, several dozen of them, and then after those, it detects “local” digital stations, about 5 or 6 of them. I’ve tried “w_scan”, but it craps out on me and says, “ERROR: Sorry - i couldn’t get any working frequency/transponder Nothing to scan!!”

PLease, please, please, put computer text between CODE tags! http://forums.opensuse.org/english/information-new-users/advanced-how-faq-read-only/451526-posting-code-tags-guide.html

You haven’t stated what type of scan you are attempting, though it looks like it was for digital cable. The #0 channels would be the encrypted channels. Given you’re receiving the local channels, I don’t see anything wrong here.

I’ve tried “w_scan”, but it craps out on me and says, “ERROR: Sorry - i couldn’t get any working frequency/transponder Nothing to scan!!”

w_scan -fa -k > channels.dvb

output format kaffeine channels.dvb

57000: 8VSB(time: 00:00)
…ERROR: Sorry - i couldn’t get any working frequency/transponder
Nothing to scan!!
I don’t use w_scan, but:

  • it looks like you didn’t specify the switch for the modulation type (you’d want -A1 for OTA, -A2 for cable, -A3 for both) in your commandline argument.
  • I think, but could be wrong, that w_scan’s kaffeine channels format is for Kaffeine v3, and not the newer v4
  • it looks like w_scan defaulted to using a scan for OTA (as evidenced by the 8VSB modulation type listed in the output for each frequency it checked) … I’m guessing (based on the info supplied about your kaffeine results) that you were attempting cable (in which case you’d want the app to be using QAM, not 8VSB) and have no antenna hooked up. Hence the no transponders found.

lsmod
long list of loaded modules not relevant to troubleshooting this problem

death:~ # l /dev/dvb/adapter0/
your kaffeine scan worked (i.e. the device is working), so this is irrelevant too

death:~ # l /dev/video*
irrelevant … further, it only applies to analog … which is not what you’re after

death:~ # l /dev/snd
irrelevant to the matter

Can anyone help me out?

Much thanks,
Joseph
the above info should set you on the right course

> the above info should set you on the right course

Ok. Stupid question #1,000… How do I view those encrypted channels? It must be possible.

You can’t with your present device. You can, to some extent, with a couple of the cablecard devices that can be run under Linux; see: CableCARD - MythTV Official Wiki … I do not know which other applications would be able to interface with them.

Actually, I do recall that MPlayer could be used with the Centon

If I can’t watch Digital TV on my computer, why do programs like Kaffeine exist? I don’t get it… Am I missing something?

BTW, I don’t claim to be an expert.

-Ezdagor

Nice user name

Well, Kaffeine is much more than just an app to watch DTV. But anyway, such viewing apps exist to watch the unencrypted content that is available, or in conjunction with hardware that is capable of decrypting an encrypted stream and which then passing the unencumbered stream off to the application.

The same limitations exist whether were talking Windows, Mac, Linux, BSD…

You can find plenty of information regarding these issues in dedicated forums such as Home Theater Computers

? Sorry, I don’t follow

Which unencrypted content? Or, do you mean the “local” DTV channels? Is there other unencrypted content?

-Ezdagor

I mean the death:~ prompt in the outputs you’ve shown  I assume thats a username.

I have always used Kaffeine to view DTV and has never had any issue with it using my Hauppauge WinTV 1100. It has worked first time on all installs/upgrades of openSUSE. I have just finished installing 12.2 RC2 as a new install, and added the Packman and VLC Repsitories to access the files I need to allow for viewing DVD and other formats. However Kaffeine is failing to start up cleanly using GUI or Console.
It throws up this:…

dsktop:~> kaffeine
QDBusConnection: session D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave.
QDBusConnection: session D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave.

I never had this type of problems before, even when I used the 12.2 beta.
The other problem I have is with flash videos in Firefox and Chromium, they would not play.
*.flv files is ok using vlc, mplayer, and totem…
*.flv file fails in xine and kaffeine.

Any help appreciated.

Hello mechan52,

By incident I am still subscribed to this old thread (allready 5 days since last post). Your post does not seem to be an answer to the problem here. It seems that you have your own problem. The chance that anybody will see that you are here with a problem deep inside someone else’s thread are scanty.

When you want help, open a new thread with a title that describes your problem in a clear and short sentence. That is the best chance to draw the attention of people with the right knowledge and experience to your problem.

To all,

I have closed this thread to avoid two problems becoming mixed in this thread.

When you want to help machan52, please wait until he started a new thread.

Thanks.

This is reopened now. Please only post about the original problem/question.

I would assume that it is a username for the OP, as what I had shown was simply a copy of what they had provided

I mean it in a broader context (there are a number of different DTV standards deployed around the world; see: Digital Video Broadcasting - LinuxTVWiki ), where upon it appears you are considering it only in relation to your particular situation (in which case, given your particular hardware, you should be able to receive the local OTA broadcasts and your cable provider’s unencrypted signals).

Ah sry I missed that
