Is this intentional, or is it something I did wrong and can fix ?

Not telling anything isn’t very inviting for people to help you.
Which openSUSE version is the thing to always start with. And it is the absolute minimum IMHO.
And telling how you came to the conclusion as mentioned in the thread title may also help to give others an idea about what you did and what happened.
To play back mp4 files and certain other multimedia formats, you have to install additional codec packages.
They cannot be included in openSUSE because of legal reasons…
See here:
Restricted formats/12.3 - openSUSE Community Wiki
And If you want to use vlc, you should install “vlc-codecs” as well…
Well, I apologize, since I should know better by now. Maybe I need to put it into my signature.
Anyway:
openSUSE 12.3
KDE 4.10
Kaffeine is 1.2.2
And now as I try and duplicate the error, it works just fine.
I did go through a sizeable update dealing with codecs so that must have fixed it.
At least for now.
This thread can be removed if you so wish and I apologize for the false alarm.
We do not normaly remove threads. And it is fine that it works again (though a bit pitty that we do not know what happened).
And thanks for reporting back.
