k3b weirdness opensuse 11.3 64-bit

openSUSE 11.3 64-bit fully updated, running the latest K3B, 2.0.1. from the Packman repos with the codecs installed. Sometimes it starts up and runs fine, others the splash and then nothing. And again other times it will start and never show up until I reboot and then there it is. When I go to system monitor it will show under CPU% “disk sleep” if that helps. FWIW I have similar issues with Nero 4. I’ve added myself to the cd rom group and all of that.

Thanks!

Try running the applications from terminal and look for errors. Maybe this will give away some hints on your problem. Also I think this could be some package conflict problem. Please post the results of this command :

zypper lr -d

Thanks for the reply. I have no idea what’s going on now. I disabled desktop effects and the problem went away. I re-enabled them and it’s still gone. I dumped some of the window effects and see if that helps. That stuff really slows things down. I suspect they were eating RAM and so K3B would hang. No errors from command line, but now it’s running OK as is Nero. Here’s the output you requested:

I spoke too soon. It’s baaaaaaaaack… The problem returns after the sytem has been up and running for a while. Desktop effects have no influence now.

Your repos seem perfectly fine AFAIK (be sure to wrap them up in code tags next time for better readability). What does lunching from terminal yeilds when it’s not working ? (be sure to use code tags pasting potential output :))Also please run top in a seperate terminal when it’s not working to check what is potentially eating your resaurces. Once I had problems with extensive resaurces usage caused by a plasmoid called “Now Rocking” version 0.15.

Of course your problem might be completly somwhere else  It may not be even remotely connected to resaurces usage.

Greg

Greg, thanks for the reply. When I run system monitor while K3B is not launching it says under CPU% “disk sleep”. Any clues?
