K3B Problems (first attempt at coping DVD)

openSUSE 11.0 with latest updates, K3B 1.0.5, KDE 3.5.9 release 49.1,
libdvdcss[1.2.9-5.1-i686] and dvd-rw-tools(growisofs)[7.1-17.1-i586] are
installed.

Trying to copy a DVD of my class reunion. When I uses tools–> copy DVD it
reads the source DVD (Sony CR-RW/DVD ROM(CRX320E), creates an ISO in
kfe-username called audio_ts.iso and then hangs (at 50%), never copies
anything to the destination DVD.

If I try tools–> burn dvd iso image it, goes thru the motion of copy dvd
but when trying to use the dvd it says its blank. Retry says the dvd is
full, erase failed.

I have tried both Staples brand and Memorex brand dvd-rw (4x. I have
followed suggests on another mail list and nothing suggested there worked.
I upgrade to k3b 1.0.5 since I was getting same issue in 1.0.4.

Any Ideas or help would be appreciated. Is it the type of DVD I’m tring to
use?

Thanks in advance.

make sure you are using the Packman ver. of k3b and it’s extra k3b packages

alternatively you could try k9copy from Packman also

or

AcetoneISO

found codec were from packman, k3b and lang. were from
download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Backports/openSUSE_11.0/ I
uninstalled and reinstalled everything from packman.

rpm -qa |grep k3b
k3b-1.0.5-0.pm.5
k3b-codecs-1.0.5-0.pm.5
k3b-lang-1.0.5-0.pm.5

Tried again to burn iso with same results and then tried copy dvd, same
results. it copies the source 100%, overall progress is 50%. it then posts
two messages, “erase failed” it ejects the DVD and then asks if you want to
load, force cancel etc.

This last time I used a brand new DVD.

I will try k9copy or Acetone ISO next.

Any other Ideas on K3b?

All the other DVD’s I tried were previously used and I think formated on
windows. This last one was brand new. Lite-ON drive is new and I burned a
11.o iso on it in the past.
Drive is only 6 months old.

Thanks again for your help and quick response.

I have never used dvd/rw in k3b myself. I’m not aware of any issues. But I have used cd/rw and they have been fine.

I did recently copy a dvd in k3b and it went without fault, in fact it was to replace one I had earlier made with k9copy which wasn’t so good - but I may have had setting wrong when doing it.

I regularly burn .iso dvd’s in k3b but always start with the ready prepared .iso and then open with k3b. k3b then will hash check - though for your situation that is not so important.

Do you have a .iso image that k3b has created as a result of the copy function? If so try opening with VLC player, it should play like your original.

My other suggestion would be to try a blank dvd-r to see how this behaves.

Also, k3b reports errors at loading. Might also be worth checking what you get when starting from a terminal
k3b

Other than that, I can only think the issue is related to dvd/rw. I’ll see if I can find anything.

I have used these DVDs before with no problem when they were brand new.
Seems to have problem when they are used and k3b tries to reuse them. It
will no format them if you try to format the DVD, says they will be
rewritten automatically.

I have had no problems burning iso’s like 11.0, etc.

I will try this I have the iso that k3b created during the first part of the
copy. Do you have a url for the player. YaST shows a videolan client but no
player. Is that the one I need?

I will go out and buy some later today or tomorrow. I only have read write
ones.

I will also try this. Is there a good document on how to read the error
logs.

install vlc from packman
right click .iso
open with - the either choose vlc or just type it in the space avail

Format your DVD-RW first with K3B.
And then try to copy.

Good idea but it tells me to just over write, formatting is dangerous and
could destroy the disc.

I had these issues in 10.2, and all were related to permissions/k3b version. IIRC I added myself to the ‘disk’ group (not ‘cdrom’).

Try formating/burning as root, if it works it’s a permission issue.

board.

I was running into the identical problem recently, using dual layer disks: it would get to the growisofs step and die, using k3b for kde3 and k3b for kde4, though the way the error was presented was slightly different. At this point, it seems like k3b is looking for growisofs and claiming it is not version >=5.20, but the version of groisofs is 7.1 (which is >= 5.20, last I checked), so I’ve been looking through source code but haven’t found anything yet.

Hmmm . . . weird, the only change I made since this morning was to flip the DMA bit back on in BIOS and try the k3b for kde3, for the first time, k3b just started writing (after breaking the windows decorator) . . . but the write just failed. As I was writing this. grrrrr

One recommendation: tell k3b to rip the iso to a folder in your home directory, and turn off the “remove this file when done” bit, so at least you have a copy and don’t have to keep ripping.

So I logged out and logged back in to get my window decorations back and used the kde4 version of k3b and tried to write an iso to a dual layer disc. The k3b windows stopped responding, the system monitor says k3b is doing an awful lot of something to do with writing a 9660 image, it’s only using 7M of memory (16M shared) and the little green light on the dvd writer has yet to turn green. What to make of that?

I’d try first to see if it works in KDE 3.5 and/or as root, to exclude DE/permissions issues.
