K3B doesn't recognise disc in drive

My K3B doesn’t seem to recognise a blank CD in the drive tray.

I’m on OS 11.2, K3B & codecs from 11.2 packman, and 11.2 KDE4 factory (ie kde4.4).

When I put a blank cd in, the kde4 device notifier shows me a blank cd and offers to create a project with k3b. I create a data project & click burn, the burn dialog has a greyed out Burn button, and the media selector dropdown says please insert an empty or appendable medium.

If I eject & re-insert the disc at this point, the device notifier again tells me I’ve inserted a blank cd, k3b’s dialog freezes for a second (seems to notice something has happened) but still does not list my cd and remains as it was before.

k3bsetup reports no problems. Burning from commandline (cdrecord) works fine. Dolphin also knows about the blank cd. I’ve burned to these discs before with no problems (K3B used to work quite recently, perhaps 4 or 5 weeks ago). Updates have been applied in the meantime.

Any ideas?

If you are sure it’s Packman: ImageBam - Fast, Free Image Hosting and Photo Sharing
And you have tried a number of CD’s to make sure
Bug report it to Packman
You can chat at #packman

This is mine:
ImageBam - Fast, Free Image Hosting and Photo Sharing

Not tried more cd’s, but seeing as kde recognises it and cdrecord burns to it, I thought the cd’s were ok.

I’ll do an update & if not then file a bug report.

Update has fixed it.

Although now my k3b comes from opensuse (Factory_Desktop for 11.2) and the codecs (same version no) comes from packman. Seems to work ok.

Tried switching system packages to packman but it wants to remove alsa… oh well, it all seems to be working so

I have the exact same problem but zypper up k3b did not fix it.

How did you update your k3b?

Please post result of the following:

rpm -qi k3b
zypper lr -d

Wow looks like I need to clean this up.

OK, that qualifies for a good spanking.
And I suspect you already know that.

Whatever you do, remove repo #8
Change the priority of Packman to 10
Then do this: http://tinyurl.com/yejwull
Make sure you have k3b-codecs too

Before I start clicking away, there are some discrepancies but I don’t have a url place to store an image for you to see. Not sure which ones to select.

Forget it. That is an absolute nightmare.

Do it this way. Open up software Manager, view by repository, go to Packman and manually examine each package and where possible switch using the Versions Tab and radio switch, to packman

Yes a big mess. I don’t even know how all those repos got in there anyway. So let me see if I understand this. I could have 2 repos that supply the same program? I don’t like that. I want the minimum number of repos. It seems like there should be a main repo for all programs to go through.

I’m not sure what you said to do… Go through the programs and wherever I can use packman for that program, switch from whatever repo it is now from, over to packman for the source? I’ll take a little time, I will have to work on this tomorrow.

This is something I want to do, print out every application program and deinstall the ones I’ll never use.

Thanks for the help, I hope this will fix K3b.

You have the idea. But view by Packman repo only

You may come to a package that throws a wobbly. So stop there and check it back to KEEP then apply the ones you already marked. Then start again, miss the ones you can’t switch and move on until you get to the end.

Ideally, as much as it pains me to say it though. You might be best just starting again and do a fresh install. Keep your /home as it is if you like though.

Ok I think I see what you mean. I just checked and K3b is at the latest version. I’ll hve to go over the lame and mp3 stuff. Which part of these updates do you think will correct K3b? Thanks.

I don’t know and can’t say for sure it will because you have so much other crud in there.
But specifically you need to work through the whole Packman list and switch what you can A-Z

I have similar problem in June 2012 after installing SuSE 12.1.

Symptoms: When i put a blank DVD in the drive, Linux gives the “Available devices”
Pop-up, which says it is a Blank DVD and offers to Create an AUdio CD or a Project.
In the K3B burning window, the line that says “Please insert an empty DVD or …”, the
line flashes but comes back to “Please insert an empty DVD or …”.

I have this for burning iso images, or copying DVD.

What i tried: - made sure i had a recent version of K3B
- Tried with an older version of K3B
- Tried with an external drive (TST…) as well as the internal one (LG)
- Tried different media from 3 sources as well as CD-R
- Checked permissions
- Tried to run as root

Here is some information on what i have:

Are you using dvd -r or +r

or rw

I use mostly DVD-RW and tried DVD+R and CD-RW

Sylvain

But is it happening with all those.
I only ask because I recently had trouble with DVD-RW that had previously been used and then blanked

That could be the problem. I will try a new blank one.

The imnpression i have now is that the way the OS manage removable media does not fit well
with the way K3N does.
Sylvain

I managed to burn a new DVD+rw. I will do more tests to see what
does and what does not work and will report.
