I have been receiving K3b burning problems for the last two weeks. When I burn a m3u playlist generated from Banshee I receive an error about not having permission, but I believe I’ve enabled all the permissions I know how.
Just now I attempted to burn a downloaded ISO and received an error even though I think the filesystem may have built correctly:
cdrecord returned an unknown error (code 254).
Sometimes using TAO writing mode solves this issue.

I’m no expert on the matter, but this doesn’t seems right:
Manufacturer: Moser Baer India Limited
Manufacturer is guessed because of the orange forum embargo.
The orange forum likes to get money for recent information.

what happened, what changed before the new problem started happening two
weeks ago?

in what way(s), using what tool(s), did you change what permission(s)?
within K3b there is a menu for "Setting System Permissions. I’ve used “users” as the burning group and set all the sub-programs listed to include the users group.
Here’s another debugging output from an attempt to burn an m3u file referencing mp3 files:

third, the next few lines would cause me to rush out and buy some better
media–that is to say, that not all disks are of the same quality…some
are real trash and you can expect both write and read errors:

then, this says there was a write error, but i can’t see why and i can’t
see that it has anything to do with permissions:

so, there are lots of things that can go wrong:
the burning head may be slightly out of alignment (rough handled?)
the disk may have manufacturing errors and can’t possibly record
correctly (try and high quality disk)
the burning lens may be dirty (smokers in the house?)
you said this started two weeks ago: what preceded the problem? (an
update to k3b, a new kernel, what?)
or, the disk burner may just have served as long as it could–they do
not last forever…my experience is that they will last about 1.5 to 2
years of normal use…which is enough, when you consider that the
seller probably gave you a six month or one year warranty!!
or, maybe you just need to change the writing mode (like it said in the
error message of your first post)
or, maybe a real guru will come along and tell you what you need to
do…sorry i can’t help more…

This is something around 6x DVD writing speed, did you also try to write at
a slower speed? It can easily be that k3b recognises the media as something
better than it really is.

Sorry that is about a CD, but the same argument applies, burn it not with
48x or what you have set, reduce the speed to let’s say 16x or even slower
just to check if that is the problem.

Same thing can be seen from your Suse Paste output except it got further into the writing.
Have you tried a different cd brand?

apparently you are allowing kpackagekit to push in whatever updates it
says you ‘need’…
and, when you do that…well, imo packagekit is broken and should not
be allowed to update or touch anything
i’m running kde 4.6.0 and k3b 2.0.2-10.1 without the problems you are
having…
i’m not saying the problem is neither low quality disks or a drive
problem…just that since it seems your problem began which the above
‘update’ that just might be the problem…
i think i would backlevel as my next attempt to regain the ability to
burn disks…
ymmv (by the way, i used YaST to delete kpackagekit and use only YaST
Online Update for package management update functions…)

The intersting question can only be answered by you not by us: Was this the
date when your trouble started? This seems to be very close to the two weeks
of problems you told us.
What you can try is to change the k3b packages to the version which is not
from packman but from oss (start yast software management search for k3b and
click on the versions tab for the packages and change it to the generic
openSUSE versions, if it does not help it is easy enough to switch back
again).

OK, I’ve tried downgrading however that prevents k3b-codecs from being compatible! So if I want to burn an mp3 list to a CD I’m stuck with the Packman version.
One change I made was to select TAO as the burn mode when beginning the burn project. But then I repeated the process with the mode set to Auto, and that worked also!

The paragraph is standard, it will say the same for any media, changing the
manufacturer line.
I have a listing of DVD manufacturers, but not CDs:
