K3B burning causes hard lock

I’m running Suse 11.2 with KDE 4.3.3 and K3B 1.68.0. When I use K3B to burn a data disc, either using the “Burn Image” function or by creating a data project and burning it, K3B will burn the disc correctly, and eject the disc correctly. Several seconds after that, my computer will totally lock up. The mouse and the keyboard will be unresponsive, Ctrl+Alt+Bkspc does nothing. I have to kill the power to the computer and restart. This, of course, causes problems becuase my hard disks don’t get cleanly unmounted, and the fsck process consumes about 20 minutes of my day trying to reboot.

I don’t know if it’s related or not, but I also get the same problem when trying to use dd from the console to make an ISO file from a disc.

Any ideas on how to fix this would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

To me this looks like a hardware problem, a failing drive or something like that. Can you still reach the machine from the outside with ssh?? That would mean the graphic system’s hung up.
Please also look at the file ‘/var/log/messages’ and find the lines before your last reboot. You can do that by hitting Alt-F2 and then entering
kdesu ‘kwrite /var/log/messages’

Post output here, and we’ll see if we can help you.

I tried a few more burns with different ISO files. I had three in a row that wouldn’t cause the freeze. I found one that would, and seems to do it consistently. After the freeze, I cannot SSH into the system.

Here’s the last several lines of /var/log/messages:

The fact that it seems to be intermittent is troubling to me. Thanks again.

There’s not a lot to go on there, but it does not like that disk that it just burned. You say it’s intermittent, and that makes me think the drive is failing. I could be wrong again though.:expressionless:
