I am using Opensuse 11.1 with KDE 3.5. The kupdateapplet returns a statement of “The repository openSUSE-11.1-Updates seems to be outdated. You may want to try another mirror.” I can’t resolve this problem and I need your input. The URL for the update is Index of /update/11.1.

Official support for openSUSE 11.1 has passed with the impending release in 10 days of openSUSE 11.4 as only the three most current releases will be supported. That would be openSUSE 11.4, 11.3 and 11.2 for now. It sounds like it might be time to consider an upgrade.

Thanks, James, for your prompt response. I suspected the problem was the age of the version. Old habits are hard to kill. Looks like there may be a file migration in the future. I’m running 11.3 on another system, so there may be a switch to it soon. With 11.4 being released soon I may hold out for it.

I would say the biggest problem you have, going to openSUSE 11.3 or 11.4 is the KDE version while using openSUSE 11.2 can still be used with KDE 3.5. Like most things, sticking with the older KDE version can be a lot of trouble, but it is possible I guess. If you prefer new but stable, then openSUSE 11.3 is your choice. If you want stable and KDE 3.5, then openSUSE 11.2 is your choice, but in all cases, KDE is going forward, now up to version 4.6 in openSUSE 11.4 and it is like swimming upstream keeping the older KDE version around. And in any event, we are here to help in every way with what ever your choice may be.

There is hope, though. The machines I maintain for at least one office got
lost with KDE4 after I got them used to KDE3 after a switch from Windows so
I went thru a lot of hoops to configure KDE4.4 when I moved them to 11.3. I
finally got nearly all the things they were used to to behave just like
KDE3.5 (nearly) so all was well. They still had problems when they got past
the desktop icons, mostly with finding things but that was mainly one lady
who is a pretty fast learner. One thought you might consider is that one of
the goals of KDE4 seems to have been taken from Windows: slowing a fast,
nimble machine to a crawl. KDE4.4 was intolerable on a few older machines
until I disabled all the eye candy and the nepomuk file catalog stuff but
they barely notice the change on the newer boxes and my life is much easier
without trying to maintain multiple versions.

Thanks for your input, Will. I have noticed the learning curve from one version to the next of KDE, but still find it to be the best GUI over Gnome. Gnome has not reached the usability level of KDE yet and most likely never will. Gnome seems to be slightly limited in capability.
