just want to know what opensuse team mean that leap based on suse enterprise?

hi there hi just want to know what do you mean when they saying that leap its based on suse enterprise linux? because its have different base packages like : gcc , kernel … and a lot more

so what do you mean by that?

sorry for the stupid question but i have to know once and for all

Hi
Have a read here;
https://news.opensuse.org/2015/06/26/work-begins-on-totally-new-opensuse-release/

AFAIK it should have the 4.1 kernel as this is an LTS release.

Well, it means that Leap is based on SLE 12.
But some packages get replaced with higher versions from Tumbleweed, and those that are not included in SLE (like KDE) are taken from Tumbleweed anyway.

So to be exact, it will be a mixture between SLE 12 and Tumbleweed, the SLE packages are maintained and will be updated by SUSE.

No, gcc is the same. The kernel (4.1) will be taken from Tumbleweed though, to have better hardware support e.g.

Does this means that server packages as at example postfix, cyrus and
so on will be even SLE packages? Can i say than that for all packages
from SLE that leap is the “Centos” version of SLE?

I ask this because i still use Evergreen 11.4 on my server and in the
first moment i was happy that opensuse will have a LTS version too but
now i’m a little bit confused about this mixture with tumbleweed.

Sorry, i don’t found anything about how Leap is in comparison to
Evergreen.

See you

No. Any SLES package can be replaced by Factory package. There is no clear policies which state which one.

Thanks for clearing this.

Well, the mixture is with SLES. 11.4 and all were derived directly from
factory, which is, for the purpose, equivalent to tumbleweed.

The current milestone takes only ring 1 & 2, whatever that means, from
sle. There are many things missing, and what’s next is undecided.

For me personally a leap-server version which use most of SLES would be
a dream but it is even very easy to wish something if you don’t do the
work  So i will see what happens.

Thanks for the url.

See you, Attila

Sorry Linux newbie here!

I don’t understand what packages are maintained from SLE? I mean, I’ve heard that NOW openSUSE will get patches from SLE.
If they patch the kernel, then it is made available to everybody, if they patch KDE stuff same thing.
What packages do they patch that never used to leave SLE? Is it Yast? I mean is there any other SUSE software?

Thank you in advance, I hope I was able to make myself clear.

PS: I don’t mean to hurt any sensitivities, I just don’t understand what the deal is…

The kernel is not taken from SLE, as the version is too old (3.12).
And KDE is not included in SLE at all.

What packages do they patch that never used to leave SLE? Is it Yast? I mean is there any other SUSE software?

SLE is just based on Factory as well, it’s just an older snapshot, so to say, with additional patches since then. Most patches should be pushed back to openSUSE at some point anyway.

Basically the base system was supposed to be taken from SLE, but more and more things had to be upgraded to the Tumbleweed version already because of problems. (Kernel, Xorg, ALSA, just to name a few)

Actually it’s mainly the package maintainers that decide whether their package should be taken from SLE or Tumbleweed. And packages can differ from both too, e.g. a patch might be added to the Leap version only for some reason.

Not even everything is decided yet. Decisions are made while it is being developed/problems are encountered.

Just to be clear: Milestone 1 is not by far what the final product will look like. It has been released mainly to have a testing base and make further development easier.
