Not sure why you’re wasting your time preaching the sins of logging on as root. Most everyone that’s used Linux has heard the warning many times… some people even still choose to smoke. Thanks for sharing…
This the gnome equivalent

Sorry… Tried to make it clear in the very first post because I really didn’t know what to call that area.
Right
I have to sleep on it
Sorry
Odd though.
I was wondering if you ever got a break!! Till the morrow then…
Try this as su -
gtk-update-icon-cache
Reboot to check
Do you have this installed
gtk2-branding-openSUSE
perhaps re-install it

most everyone has heard, but not all…and even those who have heard are
not always paying attention, or are smart enough to listen…anyway,
you should not mind if i waste my time, huh?

Q: Why do you upgrade?
A: Because the Gecko is always greener on the other side!
So said k428 in http://is.gd/Pwc3xq
Went to update gtk2-branding-openSUSE and got the following. Not sure if it’s the problem, but it doesn’t look very good.

linux-9p1b:/home/stever/Desktop # zypper in gtk2-branding-openSUSE

Loading repository data…
Reading installed packages…
‘gtk2-branding-openSUSE’ is already installed.
No update candidate for ‘gtk2-branding-openSUSE-11.4-5.4.noarch’. The highest available version is already installed.
Resolving package dependencies…
Nothing to do.

You did “su”. Never! Do “su -”. Repeat.

robin_listas… I’m taking direction from caf4926 and he really seems to know what he’s doing and providing great support. Recommend you try to provide information useful to poster’s problems… Repeat.

You have to, before upgrading, REMOVE ALL repos mentioning 11.3, or replace
with 11.4 equivalents.
Even more, it is advisable to have only these three repos active before
upgrading: oss, non-oss, and updates. NO MORE. Certainly no packman. Then
do the dup.
It is also advisable to do it in runlevel 3, logged in as root. Text mode.
And before continuing, have you read the documentation and the upgrade notes?
http://en.opensuse.org/Upgrade
After the upgrade is done, and you have reviewed the upgraded configuration
files, then you can add the multimedia things from packman or whatever
extra you need. The more repos you have, the more difficult things get.

Please, this is a community forum. And FYI @robin_listas is a very experienced user.
And I do know he makes much of upgrade over New Install. You might want to review his comments again.
I’m running out of ideas.

I’ll bet you that caf agrees with me. He also told you to use su with dash.
We both know what we are talking about. You don’t.

Robin_listas, you are correct, I don’t know what I’m doing… which is why I’m here. DenverD, in my haste, I did misread the dash. Unfortunately, after using su with the dash, the original problem still remains. If either of you have an idea how to resolve the missing icons, I’d love to hear.
Try this
Install the QT UI for yast
Switch Yast Interface to QT
Once you have that, open software management and view by patterns:
On ‘Gnome Desktop Environment’ > right click and select Install
It should show some green ticks
Now view the Installation Summary, has is it showing anything being added?
If it is let it run.
If not, now go back to Pattern view and ‘Gnome Desktop Envi…’ and bring it’s packages in to focus by selecting the patter with the mouse
Now in the area showing all the packages do Right click > all in this list > Update Unconditionally
Do the same on Gnome Base pattern
then apply

I understand that you have a bunch of computers to upgrade, and you tried
with one of them first. Things went wrong, so you reinstalled 11.3 from
backup to try again, but things were the same.
I suggest you retry the same procedure, but do it the way I suggested on
another post: only oss, non-oss and update repos active, and do the update
in text mode, logged in as root.
And please read the documentation I pointed you to.
