Just updated to 11.4 no items under Computer -> System

I just used the on-line update to upgrade from 11.3 to 11.4. Now when I click the computer button in lower left, there are no entries under system, ie. help, control center, yast, install, lock, logout, shutdown. How do I get those back?

Try a new user login. If that’s the same, we may have to dig deeper. But lets see first.

If you can post the result of this:

zypper lr -d

I have the system items when I log on as root. Did you want me to create a new user and see what that does?

Here’s the zypper output:

stever@linux-laptop:~/Desktop> zypper lr -d

You even added more than you originally had!

Sorry…

Oh bollocks !

You have 11.3 and 11.4 repos mixed up

Do the following. First open a terminal and become su -
This is how: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Wv-IaDsitA)

Now you are su -
Do the following, in the order shown. Use your mouse to copy and paste:

zypper rr 3
zypper rr 2
zypper rr 1
zypper ar -f http://download.opensuse.org/update/11.4/ updates
zypper ar -f http://packman.inode.at/suse/openSUSE_11.4 packman
zypper ref

(a) to accept if and when asked

That should be good now

Sorry for the long delay. Tried to uninstall Firefox 4 and ended up having to reload 11.3 from scratch then update to 11.4 again (have other computers to upgrade so I wanted to see if I got the same results… and did). So, here’s what I have now for repositories. Still no items under System. Did the zypper ref, accepted everything, rebooted.

You might as well re-install because you messed up by adding the VLC repo
Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide

or

Multimedia in One Click

Why exactly install 11.3 and ‘dup’ to 11.4 ?
Does the 11.4 DVD not work for you?

Well, can I uninstall VLC, remove the vlc repo and then do the one click install? I wanted to do the “upgrade” because I have other computers I need to upgrade from 11.3 and not all have DVD’s.

See above: Like that
Do:

zypper dup

reboot

Then this:

But I can’t promise you’ll have a solution to your main problem, but lets see…

you should never log into KDE/Gnome/XFCE or any other *nix-like
graphical user interface desktop environment as root…

doing so 1) opens you up to several different security problems if you
(for example) browse the net, 2) too many too easy ways to damage your
system no matter how careful your actions (for example: well documented
cases of unintended change of ownership of ~/.ICEauthority and
~/.Xauthority from user to root sometimes occurs), 3) and, anyway
logging into KDE/etc as root is never required to do any and all
administrative duties…

so, always log in as yourself, and “become root” by using a root powered
application (like YaST, File Manager Superuser Mode) or using “su -”,
sudo, kdesu, or gnomesu in a terminal to launch whatever tool is needed
(like Kwrite to edit a config file)…read more on all that here:

http://tinyurl.com/4nsaqst
http://tinyurl.com/6ry6yd

additionally: after logging into KDE/Gnome/etc as root, if you
experience problems (for example, with uncommanded file ownership and
permissions changes) and if you can provide us with details of what you
were doing while you were logged in as root, that would help us identify
if there’s a bug that needs to be fixed…thanks for your help…

Q: Why do you upgrade?
A: Because the Gecko is always greener on the other side!

Basically, I have a problem… there are no items under System after the update to 11.4. I was merely trying to give the person helping me as much information as possible and telling him that if I logged on as root, they are there. I’m not saying I log on as root under normal circumstances.

Check if you have installed:

kdebase4-workspace
kde4-filesystem

Rebooted but the picture you sent… I can’t find a program that looks anything like it. How did you get there?

Very impressed that all the people you are helping, you are able to actually create a video to show how to do this so quickly… but looking at the video, would this be KDE? How much difference does it make if I’m running Gnome?..

but, telling him root’s items are there is not usable info in fixing
your problem…

in fact, anytime you have a problem, knowing that everything is great
when you log in as root is no help…but, it might make the situation
worse…

> I’m not saying I log on as root under normal circumstances.

there is no non-normal circumstance which gives reason in Linux to log
into the GUI as root to perform any system administration duty,
including gathering information for helpers…

note: you will find other that tell you other things…live and learn.

But you said:

To me that is a kde sub menu

Perhaps you can do a screenshot?
