Just some technical questions about installing openSUSE on this computer.

This computer has a pentium 4 2.00 GHz 512 mb ram. Whats best when I install linux, what desktop should I use and is there a way to not download processes that automatically run that I don’t need?

For a low-powered machine, I recommend a light-weight desktop such as LXDE or
XFCE. To install either of these, you will need to download either the DVD (only
if this computer has a DVD drive), or the NET install. The latter downloads the
requisite packages over the network and will need a fairly fast broadband
connection. With either source, you can select the packages that you want, but
for a nooby, I would suggest taking the default, particularly when installing.
You can always add or remove stuff later.

Note: Your machine is low powered only because of the small RAM. A 2 GHz CPU is
plenty fast. You did not mention the size of the disk. Depending on what you
plan to do, 20 GB may be enough. Then again, 150 GB might not be enough.

Linux will not start services that you do not need. Anything that is not running
only takes up a little disk space.

Can I add ram later without reinstalling linux?

Yes…
