Are there any surprises after fglrx installation in 12.1?
11.4 at the beginning was ok, after kernel update, stopped working and had huge problems. Now weary…
Not having done it in a long while, I’d first try installing from ATI repo with Yast. If you run into trouble (no X) you can uninstall it with ncurses yast from a console, and it will bring you right back to where you were. Of course, make a backup of /etc/X11/Xorg.conf.d/ and Xorg.conf* files before installation, to be on the safe side. They are worth a look, as well as /var/log/Xorg0.log and such.
But if it is an hybrid graphics system all bets are off…
Yea, thought so.
Thanks guys
Hi,
If you’re using kde with effects you should read this:
AMD/ATI For AMD/ATI hardware two drivers are available: the proprietary fglrx or Catalyst and the free Mesa drivers (known as radeon, r300, r600). With the fglrx driver not all functionality is available and the performance in general seems to be better with the Mesa drivers. The recommendation is to always use Mesa drivers with desktop effects. If you find the information “Mesa” in the OpenGL/ES version, then you are using the free drivers and you do not have to do anything.
The Mesa drivers exist in an older and newer version. You should make sure to use the newer ones which you can identify by the word “Gallium” in the Renderer string.
How do we find the word “Gallium” in the Renderer string ?

It’s part of the Mesa graphics library. (You won’t find the word Gallium in the renderer sring, instead you’ll find Mesa)
# glxinfo |grep Mesa
client glx vendor string: Mesa Project and SGI
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) 965GM
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 7.10.2
Gallium has been in the Mesa code since circa 2001 with 7.5 onwards AFAIR.

I do get “gallium” in the renderer string.
glxinfo | grep OpenGL
