intalled v11.3 rather than upgraded as it would not accept the proposal but anyway I have a kde desktiop and mo web access. I get blanks when accessing the netwrok icon and the add button scan showed nothing. I then connected with ethernet and still nothing the netwrok management was greyed out. help appreciated and knowledge level low.
I try to answer just because I see that nobody has done it yet. But I hope that others that know much more, jump in.
For wireless I suggest to visit the first two sticky posts in the wireless forum.
Are you using yast or the network management plasmoid to configure the network card?
Another question
Did you install from a DVD? Have you completed the installation through internet? In that case, what repos have you enabled?
OK sorry to be a lummox I have checked many threads now and can report that I have:
broadcom bcm4312 802.11b/g named eth0
bus no. 14e4 4815
dmesg search for b43 – firmware missing
b43/ucode15.fw
I have got a tar of the firmware from broadcom-wl-4.150.10.5.tar.bz2
The insts were to extract to /lib/firmware I cannot do this, I ccan copy iy elsewhere and extract or extract then try to copy files but not iinto firmware is tehre sokmething I am missing, well obv, but what?
I installed from dvd and know not of repos.
Oki,
The driver is missing. Check this thread to know how to proceed for Broadcom driver : Install Broadcom Drivers from Packman
Don’t worry, everybody had to learn.
Have you done what DaaX suggested? Did it work?
If I understood correctly your first post, you were unable to configure the network through networkmanager: some buttons were not available or everything was grey. So there should be a problem with networkmanager. Let’s see…
As you say
installed v11.3 rather than upgraded
I assume that you have a previous installation. Have you kept your /home partition from that previous installation?
If my assumption is correct and the answer to the question is yes, I would change the name to these files or folders after closing networkmanager:
- ~/.kde4/share/apps/networkmanagement
- ~/.kde4/share/config/networkmanagementrc
mv ~/.kde4/share/apps/networkmanagement ~/.kde4/share/apps/networkmanagement.bkp
mv ~/.kde4/share/config/networkmanagementrc ~/.kde4/share/config/networkmanagementrc.bkp
Then, start again networkmanager and try to configure it.
I installed from dvd and know not of repos.
This is an important thing. Repos is where you find updates and a lot of new software. But you need internet connection. Let’s resolve that problem, and then we’ll think about repos. OK?
No, the buttons are greyed because the driver is not installed. So, the card cannot be configured with networkmanager.
This thread should have been in wireless.
The instructions for installing the firmware for Broadcom devices when you do
not have an Internet connection have been posted several times there. I refuse
to repeat them again!
I already cited one of them. He knows it : just loaded v11.3 canot get a network connection via wireless or ethernet help?
Thanks for the info the packnab cmd failed as there is no connection. I note that help on how to get around this without intenret access is available but I cannoy find it. So a guide to how to find it woudl be useful. I am doing this on my windows laptop I am puzzled why teh ethernet is not allowing a connection which is why I put it on this forum. Views appreciated.
Why? His problem is not only with wireless, it’s also with ethernet. Is it not this the right forum in that case?
Just a thought. Maybe your Ethernet under openSUSE is not working because You’re not using NetworkManager. Try Yast -> Network Devices - > Network settings -> use NetworkManager instead of ifup.
The descriptions are translated from the polish version so they could be a bit different in reality but You should get there.
Best regards,
Greg

Follow that advice to connect using Ethernet and than download whatever You need to get your wireless started.
