Purely by accident, I discovered that there is now a Leap 16 pre-Alpha, so of course, downloaded it (currently running Leap 15.6 on all machines now).
So, my ultimate question is … is there going to be a Forum Tag for “Leap 16” or maybe “Leap 16 pre-release” or something similar?
I’ve installed it (in a VirtualBox VM) with “KDE Plasma” as the DE. It seems to be running fine for the 30 minutes I’ve run it to configure the GUI my way, so need to spend more time with it.
But I do have some feedback already, so curious about my question up above.
{Sidenote: It took 3 attempts to install it, because of network delays, i.e., apparently the ISO is a minimal install, but if you want GNOME or KDE or XFCE, it needs to download whichever you choose.
I also notice it uses a “new” installer (“agama”), and I have feedback about that. )
I would suspect you’d probably have a better “platform” to be talking directly to the Leap developers, by talking to them where they are concentrated. Which is probably the openSUSE Factory - openSUSE Mailing Lists or filing tickets on Leap Issue Tracker
Thanks for this new Tag. I just found out about Leap 16 too because of it.
I agree with @nrickert about the new installer … too inflexible. When it got stuck downloading a file, it was over 10 minutes until it timed out and informed me it couldn’t download it.
I had NO IDEA there was a problem, other than it showed “installing dolphin” for over 10 minutes (I knew something was wrong - shouldn’t take that long), then finally timed out with an error message.
It’s 2024 - it should be more informative with options.
Also installed with KDE.
@aggie … any feedback to offer for other future users?
Well, my first problem was with the SDDM Login screen. I added two users and the default “Breeze for openSUSE” does not work for me … the usernames are blank.
The solution was to switch the SDDM theme to “Breeze” (from KDE).
My second problem is very sporadic. So, I click the KDE system menu (I’m using the Application Launcher menu system) then:
Settings, then System Settings
When I click around in the various settings, I will see a “QML error”. And sometimes I don’t see it , so yea, a sporadic issue.
I see both issues too. With regards to:
KDE menu → Settings → System Settings …
If I click around the different options multiple times, then the “QML error” message goes away and I then see the proper option settings.
For example, clicking on the “Sound” option, I usually see the QML error, but if I click around to other options, then back and click Sound, the sliders show up.
And I did the SDDM theme to “Breeze” fix and it works fine.
Hey, it’s pre-Alpha and actually works pretty good overall. Soon, I’ll configure everything like 15.6 and install more software for more testing.
I set various System Settings after install, so don’t visit those much. However, I did check now, and yes, the problem is still there, though the prob magically disappears after clicking around other settings.
My turn to state, “the QML issue seems to be corrected with latest Update”. Just did a zypper up and there were 160+ package updates.
I browsed around in System Settings and didn’t see the QML error. Granted, I didn’t change any setting, but I did see that error early on in the original Alpha install, just clicking around. Today, I started the System Settings app numerous times, clicked around, no error.
I obviously haven’t been paying attention… I just noticed that “Plasma (Wayland)” is the default Desktop Session. All machines (Leap 15.6) around here are set to X11 (because Wayland is buggy for us).
So just logged in with X11. I noticed it’s snappier. Did a quick “time the login to final rendered home screen” … takes 24 seconds with Wayland, and 12 seconds for X11.
Anyway, I don’t see the QML error now in System Settings. I’ll be sure X11 stays as default for login session.
Is Leap 16 PPC supposed to work on Power8? I tried the current iso but it crashed and now I’m not sure whether that’s because of its unstable status or a general dismissal of Power8. I didn’t find any info about supported hardware so far.
Well, I can’t answer your question directly @jmill , but in my search to attempt to find an answer, I ran across an old post of yours with the same query (about 15.5 | 15.6)
In that thread, I see there is a bug report posted in a Reply, and that bug report appears to still be In Progress.
My experience with Leap 16 Alpha is only with the x86-64 (Intel 64bit) version, which installed no problem and is running quite nice, so far
