Just installed 11.1 - Wireless was working... now it's not.

I just installed openSUSE 11.1 from a live CD. I had previous problems with the Internet in openSUSE but once I saw that it worked on the Live CD, I decided to make openSUSE my main operating system. So I reformatted my hard drive (erasing Windows 7 because I didn’t think I would need it anymore). After the initial startup everything worked perfect. The wireless worked for about an hour, and then just stopped. It hasn’t worked since. It detects the network, and tries to connect for about 30 seconds, then gives up. I’m connected using a LAN cable from a router right now. I have an IBM X60s and my router is a Linksys WRT54GS. Why isn’t it working all of a sudden? How do I get it to work? I had some previous experience with Linux, but I’ve always had trouble with networking and the Internet in Linux, so if you could please provide very detailed instructions that would be greatly appreciated. OK, so I opened YaST and it recognizes my wireless card as a “PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] Network Connection”

It’s strange when things just stop working, but even in these cases it’s worth going back to ‘basics’. I would start here Getting Your Wireless to Work - openSUSE Forums. That said, for a possible quick fix, check to see if IVP6 is enabled via Yast -> Network Settings -> Global Options. If it is, try disabling it; seems to be a common problem.

Be sure to check out the diagnostic script mentioned in the third post on the thread I mentioned.

If you are using NetworkManager, check /var/log/NetworkManager. Some systems
broke after updates to fix a Dbus security problem. There is a long discussion
of this at https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=486267.

It is because 11.1 has part of Knetworkmanager3 and Knetworkmanager4.1. Sometimes they play well together and sometimes they don’t. I cannot find any rhyme or reason. Deleting .kde and/or .kde4 and restarting sometimes helps.

I have not read the thread mentioned above … might be some other ideas in there. I just switched my DE to XFCE and it works fine.

Somehow it is tied to Kwalletmanager too. My problem is that I cannot get the manager to retain the WPA settings. They just disappear.

I just plan to use what works until they fix it.
