Just can't get Samba working properly..

Hi. I’m new to openSuse, used Ubuntu until now, and i have to say that openSuse is so much more stable and easyer in my opinion…

Anyway, i got everything working on my laptop, i just can’t set up my network sharing…

I have a desktop pc running Windows 7, and this laptop running openSuse 11.1!

I use Gnome by the way… When i get to Network in Nautilus, i double click on Windows Network → Workgroup → Windows7PC, but at that point i don’t see any folders or anything…

This is my smb.conf file:

# smb.conf is the main Samba configuration file. You find a full commented
# version at /usr/share/doc/packages/samba/examples/smb.conf.SUSE if the

This one helps most people with SAMBA problems here:openSUSE SuSE Linux HOWTOs and Tutorials by Swerdna

When it doesn’t help you, report back and hope that Swerdna (or others) himself will join us.

Windows 7 needs to be adjusted a tad for use with old style workgroup sharing.
See this HowTo to see what you need to do to share files from Win7.

I just connected to a network where i work and i can normally access folders there, it has to be Windows 7’s fault… Anyway i will try your tutorial as soon as i get home and will post my results…

Ok, i followed the tutorial and can see my Windows7 PC but no shared folders inside… I even disabled Windows7 firewall and still can’t see folders from Windows7 PC… ???

Oh, and i can access files on linux-laptop from Windows7 but not the other way around…>:(

Try just drilling down on share. In the browser of your choice enter:

smb://<win7name or IP>/sharename/

It seems to me that sometimes when you first accessed Win7 the shares did not
show up. But after one drilled down on a share, then future access to the
shares would display normally. If you are asked for a username/password, use
a valid Win7 user and his/her Win7 password.

What browser are you using? Did you try any others?

I tryed that but no luck…

I use nautilus…

Correction, it worked, i used smb://<win7name or IP>/sharename/ as you instructed and entered windows 7 username and password and successfully logged into my share…

Thank you so much for your help…
