Just about to Install a

Just about to install a tar.gz file. but I’m not sure if there a step before I install or after I install? I’m sorry but I been using windows XP. Very new to Linux!!!

.tar.gz is simply a compressed archive, you have to first open it (it is like unzipping a .zip or .rar in windows). Open clicking on it or right click and select extract (at least in kde)

OK this kind of help me out. Took me some time to figure out what you mean.lol! The tar.gz that I download is a game called Stepmania. For now I put it in /home/username/bin. And Extract it in there. I try to ./stepmania. and it give me./stepmania: No such file or directory. I’m lost on what to do next!

Forget that
and go here
http://packages.opensuse-community.org/index.jsp?searchTerm=Stepmania&distro=openSUSE_111

Click the install, you will need your root password.

*this assumes you are 11.1
otherwise search accordingly

Just before I thanks you forever ever and ever. I cant find it. It install right I guess!? But I cant find the file.

Find some of the file. But I still can get the game to run.T_T And yes I’m using 11.1. I think I installed it wrong. I’m still lost.

There may be no entry in the menu. In kde you can search the menu, as there is a search box.

You could try opening a user terminal and type
stepmania

If the above works. You can create a menu item with that command.

Otherwise have a look at this screenshot showing the file list of an application, in this case ‘Vuze’. It will help you locate the key executable files so you can create your own menu item.

When I type stepmania in the Terminal it gave me this:

Limoon@Boot:~> stepmania

It is installed then.
I can’t offer much more advice, as I am not familiar with this application. I did a quick Google:
Help! Default note skin for “dance” missing! - StepMania Forums

Maybe the forum there will help?

mmm the web site you gave me did not help… but i find something within stepmania. But Ark it not letting me extract.

You should be able to right click as opposed to just click and open with ark.
Right click - extract here

If that option is not available to you. Open Yast - Software Management and look for: kde4-ExtractAndCompress

It is in Packman.

I cant find this Packman. I went to look for it in Softwar Mangement. But cant find it.

Packman is a Repository
Go to Repositories and select add, default by URL

enter this url
Index of /suse/11.1

Name= Packman
OK/Accept

Now open Yast Software Management and search…

Asking for a CD??? What?? Is there away to do it without the CD?

Open a terminal and do

zypper lr

post result

hear it is:
