Joining Active Directory and having a static IP?.?

Hi,

I have sucessfully joined my opensuse 12.1 box to our .local domain using DHCP for my NIC card. However, my linux system needs to have a static IP. So I setup up my static IP (Everything network-wise is working [can access internet, and windows shares]), however on boot the system stalls right at, or in between, setting up the NIC card and “Configure the localfs depending network interfaces” failed . After around 5 minutes the system continues to boot and I am presented with my login screen. I can sucessfully login with domain users, so the service is still connected and working.

So far I have looked through /var/log messages file and the samba logs and have not found any relevant information yet.

Maybe I’m having trouble writing correctly in google, but I am having trouble finding information related to correctly working Static IP addresses, Active directory membership, and LocalFS tie-ups.

Any help would be appreciated.

thanks,
Me

You haven’t described much about whatever investigating/testing/troubleshooting you might have tried,

But on general principles you should never configure a static address on any Host in an Active Directory Domain (and likely not advisable for many other similar network security systems as well)… AD relies on a symbiotic relationship between DHCP, DDNS and Domain Controllers to automatically register and provide network services.

Instead of configuring static addresses, you’re highly advised instead to configure Reserved DHCP leases.

I’m not sure what sort of set up / network you are using but my static ip’s are all set in the router via their mac addresses.

Sorry for the long wait.

I appreciate the responses. I will look into using reserved leases in the future. For the time being I fixed my static IP issue by removing avahi from my Suse system and it joined easily.

Domain names with .local ending can not be used with active directory and
Linux, there is a bug. If you do, you have to disable zeroconf.

I have used static addresses with AD without problems. Of course, it has to
be out of the range of dhcp.

I have had a couple routers that when told to do that, didn’t. Quite
annoying. That led to some crazy troubleshooting sessions.
