jittery video playback ?

Hi I just finished trying to install the codecs for various audio/video playback (Restricted Formats/11.2 - openSUSE-Community) and now i can play flash, mp3s and such but most of the video playback is very jittery and is not watchable. I have now tried it with mplayer and kaffine but still the same. I had this problem before as well and even tried VLC but no luck. I had thought i could just add the Nvidia repository and type in my graphics card, install and be done with it but no such luck (nothing even comes up when i type geforce). Has anyone else had this problem? any ideas on how to resolve it would really be appreciated!

Cheers

What can you tell us about the videos you are trying to play?

How about installing from packman the application “mediainfo” and use that to determine the video bit rate of the videos you are trying to watch. Or install the application 'tovid" from packman, and use its utility “idvid” to tell us the bit rate of the video you are trying to watch.

Also tell us more about your PC hardware. CPU ? RAM ? Exact graphic card model?

An example of mediainfo:

mediainfo problemvideo.avi

and an example of tovid’s idvid:

idvid problemvideo.avi

where “problemvideo.avi” is the video that is giving you difficulty.

Also, its important you do NOT mix the installation of applications from both videolan and Packman software repositories , as they are not compatible in some cases and by mixing you WILL get the sort of effects you have reported.

Hi OldCPU, thanks for the reply, and sorry about the lack of info in my post (I wasn’t thinking). I have run medioinfo for win before and my videos are a variety of combinations. I have tried on files encoded sing xvid and divx and with ACC and mp3 and ogg audio with vid bitrates as low as 500kbps and high as 2300 kbps. My computer specs are as follows (though it should be noted that i am able to play all these videos in windows with no problems so i would assume the hardware is sufficient):
Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU E2180 @ 2.00GHz
2gb ddr2 mem
Mainboard Model P4M90-M7A
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GS w. 256mb ddr mem

also, i had said flash plays fine, and it does on places like youtube but i tried ripping a yt video to a flv local file and it too was jittery. As for VLC and the packman repositories, i dont have VLC installed at the moment (that was for a previous installation, i have since formated/reinstalled [upgraded] to 64bit opensuse).

Thanks!

With those specs you should not have a problem. I can play back videos with those bit rates on my sandbox PC which is an old 32-bit athlon-1100 with 1GB RAM and with a Nvdia FX5200 graphic card with no problem with openSUSE-11.2 KDE and openSUSE-11.3 (milestone2 /3) LXDE desktop. I note on that same Sandbox PC that playback in Gnome was a problem due to Pulse Audio and I was forced to tinker with it to solve (and the ongoing Pulse problems was a reason why I ended up eventually removing Gnome from that test Sandbox PC).

Please note RedDwarf’s suggestions (in 1st post, and my suggestion in 3rd post)
Check your multimedia problem in ten steps - openSUSE Forums please use that as a guide to ensure the packages you have installed are reasonable.

Also, in case the jittery playback are originating because of pulse audio problems please note step-7 here (and be certain to go thru each link in that step for workaround/fixes): Step-7 - SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE

… note also that one’s bandwidth and internet traffic and not having ipv6 disabled can cause a jittery video playback on a browser with streaming video.

Please, can you advise what graphic driver you are using? fbdev ? vesa ? nv ? nvidia ? There is guidance here in post#2 as to what those graphic drivers are: openSUSE Graphic Card Practical Theory Guide for Users - openSUSE Forums
