Hi all, this is my first post here (if I’m not wrong…), and I need your help to solve a very frustrating problem with my system. The playback of any video (e.g. from any DVD, from any ISO, from any MPG/AVI, etc) is always jerky. Ok well, jerky is not really the best definition. But I don’t know the right word. Especially during “high speed” actions in the video, the resulting frames on the monitor seems to have some sort of horizontal bands… …it’s something like a part of the frame is not refreshed together with the rest. Just to give an example, you see one half of the current frame (on the bottom) together with one half of the previous one (on the top). It happens with VLC, Kaffeine, MPlayer, MythTV… The system is an openSuSE 12.3, with KDE 4.10, kernel 3.8.5. Hardware: Athlon 64 X2 4000+, 1 Gb RAM DDR2, nVidia GT 520 (driver 313.26) with 2Gb dedicated RAM. All is connected to a Philips 37PF7331 LCD TV, with 1280x768 @ 60Hz resolution, over a HDMI cable. What else? All the codecs should be installed properly, including the restricted formats. Any help and suggestion will be highly appreciated. (No problem with a 11.4 setup on my Core2 Duo laptop, on which every video runs smoothly, even if connected to the same a.m. LCD TV using the same HDMI cable)

check if your user is in the video group (in 12.3 this is not the case
by default as it was in previous versions)

i doubt whether modern Oses can run on 1 gb ram.
Our GNU/Linux User Group laptop has 512 MB of RAM and the openSUSE-12.3 rescue CD (with XFCE) boots to it no problem. I note the 32-bit openSUSE-12.3 KDE live DVD also boots to 512MB of motherboard RAM, with no bad graphic artifacts, but as expected is exceptionally slow.
IMHO, without further evidence, this is not a motherboard RAM problem.

I agree, i could get oenSUSE 12.2 / GNOME Shell working on a laptop with 512 RAM, but things were Slow and steady but manageable.

Hi Martin, yes it was one of the first things I’ve done after the clean install of 12.3…
Thanks
Lorenzo

vazhavandan, oldcpu, thank you both for your comments.
With respect to general performances, I can say that the system, even if with only 1Gb Ram, performs quite well.
Obviously, nothing to do with my laptop with 4Gb Ram, which performs exceptionally.
However, I was planning to upgrade RAM to 4 or 8 Gb DDR3 (the motherboard does support it), since that was my last resource in trying to solve this issue, but I wish to avoid unnecessary expenses… even if we are talking about some tenths of euro.
I guess I will upgrade RAM in any case, but is there anything else I can try or verify?
Thanks a lot in advance.
Lorenzo
Since you have kernel 3.8.5 I assume you installed the nvidia driver
from the binary run file?
Can you post the outputs from
glxinfo
xvinfo
to susepaste.org and give us the links here?

I will do it this evening when I’ll be back at home.
The system is always up, but I’ve not yet configured it for the Remote Access.

Can we assume you have NOT made any deliberate/conscious custom edits to any configuration file for graphics ?
Can we assume you have NOT made any deliberate/conscious custom edits to any configuration file for graphics ?
You can assume that position.
All worked out of the box in 12.3 after the appropriate packages installation.
All the minimal fine tunings have been made through the nVidia configuration panel.

Ok … what changes (if any) did these nVidia configuration panel changes do ? Did they create a custom /etc/X11/xorg.conf file ? Did they update any of the files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ directory ?

Here is the output from glxinfo
and from xvinfo

Here is the actual xorg.conf created during 313.26 install:
Additionally, in nvidia-settings I only changed color range from FULL to LIMITED, and unchecked SYNC TO VBLANK in opengl settings.
Nothing changes reverting these options.
Did they update any of the files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ directory ?
I don’t think so… all the files seems to be untouched.

What happens if you boot without that file ?

They both look good and correct, two things come to my mind.
-
a glitch with the desktop effects, check in the deskop effects which
rendering type is enabled (xrender/opengl, native/raster) -
check the nvidia-settings (XVideo settings) if vsync to blank is
enabled, toggle that setting and see if tearing goes away

Hi Martin, these are the options selected: opengl + raster.
VSync is disabled, and as I already wrote before, nothing changes enabling/disabling it.

Nothing changes.
The system boots normally, but the issue is still present…

My ideas are more or less exhausted, I vaguely remember that at some
time it was recommended to disable composite in some situations
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Disable"
EndSection
in xorg.conf. Maybe worth a try maybe not.

I’ll give it a chance.
This workaround is reported in MythTV VDPAU wiki:
And, I think is not strictly MythTV related, but a more general issue.
And, frankly speaking I don’t know why I have not tried this before… :shame:
Last but not least, I will look for somebody to ask for a 4Gb stick to try out if it works…
