I have been having a series of problems with java related applications. At first I suspected the applications themselves, namely, eclipse, netbeans and others. However, the common problem between all of the java applications seems to indicate java itself. The problem presents itself in one of three ways, an immediate reboot, a system freeze, or if I am lucky java crashing out safely.
I have tried completely removing and installing java (5,6 and the preview which are in YaST). I even tried installing from SUN’s download. None of these have helped, so for the interim I have just completely removed java. The system is solid as a rock again…
How should I proceed? Is there a crash dump I can submit? Where to? Could this be hardware?
Incidentally, the problems may have started after I added a reference to a c++ library (petsc) in eclipse… But, I don’t think that could be the cause?
i’d suggest you start by avoiding all previews, and installing only
those packages you need which have -sun- in their package name in
YaST, and then use for a while looking of that rock-solid feeling…if
you get it, then add other stuff VERY carefully, slowly, deliberately
and when you find the flake BACK OUT…

Something has crept into Java in the last few updates. I run DB2 on an AMD
X2-64 and have noticed that a particular function in the Java based Control
Center now fails with a file access error. An identical backup
installation that has been idle and not updated for several months still
works as expected. I don’t have enough detail to file a bug report yet and
it’s not a critical problem as manual performance of the operation works
but SOMETHING has changed. Now all I have to do is figure out if it’s a
Java issue or and underlying system change but that may take time for a
non-pressing issue with a convenience function.
Thank you palladium, however, this is actually the first thing i tried. I tried each version in YaST from the oldest to the newest preview, and the problem repeated itself.
When I tried the bundled Netbeans and java package the installation would actually crash/reboot during the install.
Java was rock solid a few weeks back, but I can’t get it back to that point. Do I need to do anything special to completely remove java??
Still no luck… is there a way to get a clean copy of the OS without losing drivers and files? The problem didnt exist until two weeks ago and I can’t track down what triggered it.
