Just starting. using Suse 12.3
Running Windows 7 as the host. Using Virtual 'Box.
starting with an application using Wine.
It needs JRE 1.6.0-17 and I cannot find under Java how to download older versions.
Is there a way thru a terminal to download it using rpm?
Larry
Why do you need Wine to run a Java app? You can find previous versions of Java on Oracle’s website, but read the disclaimer!
Please be aware that older java versions have serious vulnerabilities.
And, sorry, but I don’t get it. Windows as a host, linux in a virtual machine on that host, then run wine to emulate ( yes I know, wine is no emulator) windows. In the Netherlands we call it the “Droste effect”, Google is your friend to find out what that means.
first off I would like to run Suse full time. I am a diabetic and I cannot find software that will run. Bayer is my meter of choice and I need to take the data off the meter and run reports.
Suse meets everything else I do such as email banking web information etc.
since Wine can run windows apps. (well some and limited at best) I thought I might get it to work.
I have a request into bayer to see if they can always use the latest java and am awaiting an ans.
Yes I am aware of the older issues could be a problem.
thank You.

Is this the software that you are trying to use:
http://www.bayerdiabetes.co.uk/sections/products-for-my-diabetes/meters/bayer-glucofacts-deluxe-software/bayer-glucofacts-deluxe-overview
It says “Java™ 1.6.0_17 or higher (Java 7 compatible)”.
Have you tried a later Java and it failed?
What error messages are you seeing?
Thank you for responding;
your link is to Bayer in UK I am registered in the US and I am running the software under Windows. ver. 3.05
I got somewhat into the Bayer site in the link above but cannot complete the registration since there is no selection for the US
I do see that you can download software to run on a MAC.
I am looking for Linux right now I am using Suse 12.3
do you know if Bayer does any software that will run on Linux?
I would write them but when I log in to the site using the link above it keeps asking me to complete the registration and I cannot get past the country sel. since US is not a choice.

Say any other country, then specify yours in the text and explain why,
if they allow long enough letters.

By typing glucofacts into google I see that the correct starting point
to contact them might be
https://www.bayerglucofacts.com/Select.aspx

No, I don’t know.
But you haven’t answered a single one of the three questions I asked
you, so I’m not going to be able to try to help until you do.
So,
If you live in the USA, then this is likely the relevant page
Bayer CONTOUR - GLUCOFACTS® DELUXE
According to the page,
- The application is compatible with WinXP, so it’s <likely> that the application should run under WINE without issue
- The application requires a cable connection. Without more description whether this is a USB or RS-232 cable(15-pin or 9-pin), it’s hard to know if that will be an issue connecting to a Virtualbox Guest, particularly a WINE app running on Linux. Do you consider yourself technically capable or willing to persevere to overcome not so simple obstacles?
- Java should not be an issue, you should install the latest version available and that means released April 2013 or later.
If you have a Windows Host, in this case I recommend installing directly on that machine, but there can be reasons why you would want to investigate alternatives, eg
– If WinXP, you’re already on last legs of support. Despite another 9 months or so of minimal support, it’s subject to various exploits with no ability to harden against.
– If an app can run in some kind of virtualization, I’d ordinarily recommend for various benefits… Management, easy backups, snapshots, etc. beyond what you’ll get in the OS.
HTH,
TSU
First I was trying to run Glucofacts Deluxe. but I was trying to install a windows version using Wine and it started to install then I got the box stating that it wanted 1.6.0-17 or higher.
I then installed java 7 which I downloaded from oracle and after the install i get the same box stating it wants 1.6.0_17 or higher.
This is the only error indication I get and like I said it is with Wine. They show the program but it has no support and probably will not function.
I am sure the problem is with Wine and that is why I started looking for a software program in Europe. I feel there are more linux type OS’s there then here in the us.
I did get a response from Bayer in UK. they received my info request and will respond soon.
I am sorry for not answering. I stared with the link you did supply and seemed be waiting for their response.
Larry
Have you installed Java in Wine? You’ll need the Windows installer for this purpose.

As chief sealth suggests, it may just be that the Java installation
hasn’t been completed in the right place. That’s the next thing to try.

I think there are strong communities most places; it’s finding them that
can be difficult! But we’ll try to help you get it running.
There is an open-source Linux project that may do what you want:
I know nothing about it, and I know nothing about what kind of community
it has that could help you. So it might be worth a little of your time
to explore it, but it could turn into a frustrating waste of time, so be
prepared to cut your losses.

I think it’s worth keeping on trying to install the existing software in
Wine by following chief sealth’s suggestion. But also see if Bayer can
offer any more help.

That’s OK.

TSU I am sorry I did not get back to you. I think I am capable of sticking with a problem and working til the end.
when I started this thread I just installed Suse 12.3 and was having problems with guest additions on Virtual Box. thru many searches I now have that working and behind me.
as to Java I agree it should not be a version problem. I am more inclined now to think that Glucofacts is trying to install and cannot find a Java copy in the folders that it thinks it should be.
I have to learn more from WineHQ or forums as to the file structure that it uses.
Thank you and everyone else who might have tried to help me.
Larry
Thank you for the advice. I am inclined now to think that Java is not where Whine thinks it should be when compiling it .
when I started all this I had just installed 12.3 and virtual box guest additions did not work properly and now I have that fixed and trying to work on this problem.
Thank You. I feel WineHQ and forums will be better to search for answers???
