* Check to make sure that java is enabled in your browser. (learn more)
* If you do not have java installed you may download it here.

Is your system x86 or x86_64? There are different plugin directories for each architecture. You must have the one that works with your browser linked to its plugin folder.
A way to check is to type <about:plugins> in URL field. This will list all the plugins installed in that browser.

sun has not yet made a 64 bit version of java…hence, you can’t
install it for use by firefox…
install the 32 bit version of firefox and java and it will work (just
as fast and wonderful as will the 64 bit version–if it ever works)…
i loaded up SUSE 64 about three years ago, but got tired of all the
little extra stuff i had to do…and, when i loaded 10.2 i just went
pure 32…much simpler, and just as fast unless you have a million
line database and 4 Gig of ram…read around, and decide for yourself
what is the best way for you…

java-1_5_0-gcj-compat works fine for my 64 bit browsers. You can also use the java-1_6_0-sun-plugin, which is i586 arch, on an openSUSE x86_64 platform. Download a Firefox tarball from Mozilla. Extract it to wherever you like and run the firefox shell script or firefox-bin executable from there. It will use your existing mozilla profile. It is 32 bit and will also work with the Adobe flash plugin.
