issues with snapscan in 13.2

Working through a series of small issues with 13.2.
my agfa snapscan was working fine in 13.1, but on a new laptop, it is recognized but will not load the firmware

Some pertinant lines
from snapscan.conf

# Change to the fully qualified filename of your firmware file, if
# firmware upload is needed by the scanner

firmware /lib/firmware/SnapScan_1212U_2.bin

firmware
cory@linux-8v1z:~> ls -l /lib/firmware/SnapScan_1212U_2.bin
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 32768 Dec 23 07:37 /lib/firmware/SnapScan_1212U_2.bin

error message

Failed to open usb address I/O error ( I can't cut the message )

and dmesg
[22491.382619] usb 3-2: new full-speed USB device number 2 using xhci_hcd
[22491.526417] usb 3-2: New USB device found, idVendor=06bd, idProduct=2061
[22491.526432] usb 3-2: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0

[23031.782406] usb 3-2: usbfs: interface 0 claimed by usbfs while 'xsane' sets config #1

I think the last dmesg line is the key, but I don’t now how to follow up

Any ideas??

I wonder if that error is related to being connected to a USB 3 port (with the xhci_hcd driver)? Does this laptop have any USB 2 ports avaialble? (Or you could try disabling USB 3 support in the BIOS if it exists.)

Some possible answers here:

BTW, do you get the same error reported when trying to scan via alterantive SANE front-ends eg simple-scan or skanlite?
