Having all sorts of issues with “what appears to be” my Realtek USB Wifi dongles recently (think I have almost tied it to the dongles…)
One of them gives me a “kernel bug” on boot - see here - and the other is doing multiple weird diskchecks on boot, eg
that either never end, or if they do, then can’t seem to login (and exceptionally slow…)
The 2 dongles are:
ID 0bda:b812 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL88x2bu [AC1200 Techkey]
ID 0bda:b82c Realtek Semiconductor Corp. 802.11ac NIC
It’s a multiboot system, no issues with any other OSs. And these seem to work when plugged in “after the fact”, is only a boot issue? Have another based on MT7921AU that is fine.
I have the same Realtek USB dongle (RTL88x2bu) and experienced the same crash, starting after the update to kernel 7.2.x.
I don’t know what the problem is, but it’s not the kernel module, at least for me. I can boot the system with no suitable kernel modules (rtw88_8822bu or 88x2bu) and the system will still crash (it becomes gradually but quickly unresponsive). I also found that the system would boot and work normally if I unplugged the dongle, but once I plugged the dongle back in, the system would become unresponsive after a few moments.
I “fixed” the problem by using a custom kernel (I used the so-call XanMod kernel). No crashes, and you can use either the included “rtw” module or the 88x2bu, which I find gives a little bit faster speeds.
I concluded that it was one of suse’s custom patches that was the problem. Maybe this is the case, maybe not.
