Issues with Firefox on OpenSuse 12.1

First of all, wish a Merry Christmas and a happy new year to everyone!

I’ve being experiencing some issue with OpenSuSE 12.1 (fresh install) specifically when using firefox. When opening certain websites (which I suspect rely heavily on flash), the systems hangs and takes me back to the login screen. As of now, I’m forced to use Chromium which doesn’t present the same behavior even though my favorite browser is Firefox.

My system is a HP 6730s laptop with crappy integrated intel graphics. I’m kinda new to Linux OSes, so any help provided would be appreciated.

I am not having any problems with firefox. I’m using firefox 9.0 (an update came through a few days ago). This is a 64 bit system.

I have not had problems on a 32 bit system either, though I mostly work from this 64 bit system. There were a lot of flash problems in 11.4, but I am not seeing those here.

If you want help, you will need to provide more information:
firefox version;
32 or 64 bit install;
which firefox extensions are you using;
urls of sites with which you are having problems.

If the sites require login before the problem shows up, then it might be difficult to reproduce the problems unless there is somebody here who happens to have a signon for the same site(s).

Thanks for the quick reply.

I’m using OpenSuSE 12.1 64-bit and Firefox ver. 9.0 (don’t know if it’s 32 or 64 bit since it was updated through zipper).
Current plugins are the following:

  • Packagekit
  • NPAPI Plugins Wrapper 1.4.4
  • Quicktime Plug-in 7.6.6
  • Shockwave Flash ver. 11.1 r102
  • Skype Buttons for Kopete
  • Gnome Shell Integration
  • IcedTea Web Plugin 1.1.3
  • DivX Web Player 1.4.0.233
  • Adobe Reader 9.4
  • Windows Media Player Plugin 10

And about the sites, I’m not quite sure which sites trigger the issue since I usually have multiple tabs open, but I can go through them one by one and see what happens…

Okay, those are pretty standard extensions. I don’t have the Adobe reader plugin, but otherwise my list looks the same.

When you are looking at the plugins list in firefox, there’s a place where you can select “extensions” to look at firefox extensions.

My guess is that you have not added any, since otherwise you would have realized that was what I was asking about. Some people install dozens of extensions and cause themselves problems. Other folk use very few. I mainly use “noscript” which blocks all javascript unless I enable for a site.

Your firefox will be 64 bit (based on the info you provided).

If you can identify a specific site that causes problem, then I hope some other folk can report their experience with that site.

A possible source of your problem might be related to http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/laptop/468968-firefox-konqueror-crash-opensuse-12-1-a.html. While not everything in that thread may pertain to your situation, you did specify that you have the “crappy integrated intel graphics”, to wit, the Intel 4500MHD found on some models of the HP6720S.

In particular, perform the suggestion in the post http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/laptop/468968-firefox-konqueror-crash-opensuse-12-1-a-2.html#post2414177 concerning Xorg.0.log.old.

After you post, we can review the Xorg logs to determine if your problem(s) is/are in the Intel driver.

Sorry for the late reply guys, but I was quite busy these few days.

nrickert:
The only extension I have enabled is openSUSE Firefox Extensions 1.0.2.

So far, it seems that you have it right with this particular bug, since while using Konqueror the issue is repeatable.

Once I have a little more time this evening, I’ll provide the info you requested.

Once again, thanks in advance.

As suggested, this is the output of the Xorg.0.log.old file:

Subscribing to thread. I have the same issue. HP dv8000 laptop, opensuse 12.1. Firefox 9.0 is slow to load/launch and slow to navigate to ANY page. Have Chrome as well, and it is VERY fast.

You can peruse these articles at the Mozilla Support site.
