Issues with arial font

Hi all,

I am facing an unusual issue with fonts on my desktop. That is whenever I try to install microsoft font arial, the system font display gets impacted i.e. becomes smaller and difficult to read in few places. I tried installing this font from Yast->software Manager->FetchMSTTFonts, Configure Desktop->Font Management and finally copying the font to folder /usr/share/fonts using sudo. All three ways gave me the same result. i found no other font from the fetchmsttfonts package causing this issue.

Further I tried increasing the DPI at Configure Desktop->Application Appearance->Fonts->Force fonts DPI to a higher range. This improved the situation slightly, but the font display does not look neat.

Is anyone else facing this issue? Any pointers to fix this?

I use OpenSuSE 13.1 AMD64 KDE desktop. Have a NVidia card GeForce 7100 / nForce 630i and 4 GB DDR2 RAM.

Regards
Ganesh

I no longer use ms fonts at all. They have absolutely no benefit, in fact quite the opposite I find.

I have them installed and I have no issue at all. I do not use them, but
some of my correspondents do. Having them available avoids problems.

/var/adm/update-scripts/fetchmsttfonts-11.4-15.1.4-fetchmsttfonts.sh.txt

is simply a bash script. You should be able to run it in konsole and watch the error messages, if any.

save yourself the hassle of using the ms fonts.
I have found in the past that they do have a negative impact on the look of other fonts installed.

If you want a font that looks like Arial just use Liberation Sans - it is almost identical.
