I take it back. Actually they do have device.map. Judging by modification date, they were created by installer indeed. Even 13.2 has it.
And they contain /dev/sdX entries making them rather useless.
Also having them serves zero purpose as /etc/default/grub_installdevice (which contains actual device where grub is installed) contains /dev/disk/by-uuid anyway.
