JDS was based off SLES 8 orginally (actually
it was the Desktop version… can’t remember the
actual name). AFAIK, the “deal” didn’t get them
SLED… so the next version was based off
of SLES (with many a pitfall, Sun didn’t understand
the level of work required to build a good
desktop distro… and they pretty much stunk
it up… big time).
Sun’s goal was to NOT support Linux all along
though… they just needed it temporarily while
they got Solaris 10 in order… which still isn’t
all that great… Solaris 11 will fix much of the
mess… if Sun can survive that is.
