Is There a Wireless Indicator when using ifup Connection Method

I have just discovered a good reason not to use Network Manager in 11.4 when using NFS so I have switched to ifup. My problem now is that the no neat widget to show me that wireless is connected no longer works. Is there an alternative which works with ifup?

No. You need to use iwconfig, ifconfig, and ping to make sure the network is up.

BTW, I use NM with NFS on 3 different 11.4 systems, so I have no idea why you
had to go away from NM on yours.

Hi again,
Are you using NM for wifi connection or for copper? If using wifi I cannot understand why you do not get the same problem as me so I need some help sorting out my system, starting with my being able to post the start up text.

As you know from my previous posting all this wifi activity on my part has been prompted by a new problem with an AP. I have solved the problem for one location by installing an EnGenius AP but I am still trying to get the HP ProCurve devices to work to cover another location. This can be 5GHz as clients are 802.11a enabled, thereby eliminating possible interference from b/g devices.
Sadly I still have the problem, particularly with openSUSE 11.4 so I shall start a new thread to seek help. My latest thoughts are that the timings for the TKIP exchange are incompatible and I cannot change them on AP.
Many thanks again.

All of them use wifi. My only ifup systems have fixed IP and are connected by wire.

Excuse, but this explanation makes no sense. Do you mean the authentication
exchange? Look at the logs in /var/log/NetworkManager to see them.

I think a new thread is a good idea, but be very specific about what is happening.
