When I installed suse for the first time (2 days ago), i didn’t know what root password was so i left it blank. and since then I haven’t been able to update (getting “User is not permitted: org.freedesktop.packagekit.system-update”) or enter Yast (“su returned with an error”) and i think maybe that’s why.
Google has a few thousand hits on this as well… as long as you have
physical access (or equivalent) to the box you cannot be stopped.

when the grub comes up there is a kernel option line in the screen just press 1 and enter.
it will boot upto login in console.with #
there you can enter passwd
that is called boot runlevel 1
single user admin mode.
dont startx there.
