is there a system reconfigure?or recovery mode boot?

add user worked fine.
but it behaves the same way . no gnome.
i had added to video wheel audio cdrom disk groups.
now there is some gnome configuration error.
moat gnome applications run in icewm and xfce.

the initial first run system config command still available somewhere in the system?
one which runs the initrd make and other configurations?

This just confirms that it’s not user settings.

And we just performed a distribution upgrade to pretty much default except for Packman.

So it’s not looking too good.

What happens if you use the Failsafe boot. And try gnome login

there had been a kernel update and the old failsafe boot kernel is not found any more.
i tried boot levels 1 3 4
after console login $ gnome login
returns display not found.
then at gdm login twm xterm gnome login brings the same effect as freez screen.
the same goes for all user, root logins.
tough luck

A kernel update would not remove the failsafe option, it would update that as well, unless you had been messing with the menu file previously.

Consider backup and fresh install.

i have not middled with files.
only worked with yast and zypper updates and upgrades.
i have another free partition.
i will try a new install in it.
then we can see if it is my video problem.

i have installed suse-11.2 gnome in another partition.
this also behaves same way. no gnome desktop.hangs there.

while the install doing automatic configuration there was a pop up saying waiting for cupsd to start. for about 5 minutes it was showing this window.when i pressed continue in another 2 minutes the window gone and completed the automatic configuration.

is it gnome cannot run without cupsd configured?

if so what now can be done. i do not use a printer for the time being. shall i try removing cups ?

Worth a try
system runlevel

changes in run level modules did not help login to gnome desktop.
i have now tried 4 times install update upgrade and all things possible.gets stuck same way.
out of 10 trials 6 times i can get to gnome desk top in one install ,it is not reproduceable in the other installation.
how can i stabilize this behaviour?
