What version of openSUSE
Can you login and get me:

zypper lr -d

i just installed from SUSE-11.2-GNOME.iso
after a long struggle of burning 2 3 cds
i can login root and user into system in icewm and xfce
if i login to gnome it just gets stuck
hard rest only possible.
except this the system seems to work ok

If you login as USER not root!!
Using xfce
Open a terminal a post to me the result of:

zypper lr -d

linux-efe6:~ # zypper lr -d

now i have got the hang of adding /removing repos correctly , i think
it reads same as you mentioned in the last post.

No - Not correct you have not made any changes at all

When you post it again, this is what it should look like:

1 | repo-update | openSUSE-11.2-Update | Yes | Yes | 99 | rpm-md | Index of /update/11.2 |
2 | repo-oss | openSUSE-11.2-Oss | Yes | Yes | 99 | yast2 | Index of /distribution/11.2/repo/oss |
3 | index_of_/distribution/11.2/repo/oss | index of /distribution/11.2/repo/oss | Yes | Yes | 99 | yast2 | Index of /distribution/11.2/repo/non-oss |
4 | ftp.skynet.be-suse | Packman Repository | Yes | Yes | 99 | rpm-md | Index of /pub/packman/suse/11.2 |

i tried deleting all repos shown in Yast software repo first screen. then added the 4 repos .then i got the previously posted zypper lr -d

now i had to remove all repos with zypper rr 1
and i got no repos defined.
now with yast i added 4 repos you have shown.
then i get the zypper lr -d

ramaswamy@linux-efe6:~> zypper lr -d

i still wonder why yast did not remove the repos 14 nos.

also why the serial numbers have reversed from add order?

Please open a terminal and become su
Become su in Terminal - HowTo - openSUSE Forums

Do this in the terminal

zypper ref

then

zypper dup

zypper dup completed without any error.
again i tried
ramaswamy@linux-efe6:~> su
Password:
linux-efe6:/home/ramaswamy # zypper dup
Loading repository data…
Reading installed packages…
Computing distribution upgrade…

Nothing to do.
linux-efe6:/home/ramaswamy #

for gnome session login i get only a green[dark] with a movable mouse cursor.all other things locked.[nothing else present, keyboard would not respond only hard reset]

i can invoke a gnome-panel from terminal in icewm/xfce/twm

it shows what gnome panel loos like.
it does not recognise any terminal
simply cant get the gnome desktop.

But you can switch sessions here:
http://public.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pV3CFRNxdkY8riIpLM6CgGjO97E5LdVB7jv6_BTEbL5qWNSpcGRT_ZvfYy4R33e4qV97czVzWhGYZc-5bMkwmtw/session.type.png

It’s just that with gnome selected you can’t proceed - Is that correct.

yes i cannot get gnome desktop.
it goes to blank darkgreen mouse cursor movable only .
and there X gets stuck.
with gnome-panel in xterm i can see the gnome panel and all applications work.
same with root login also.
the distro upgrade has not changed the basic wrong/missing configuration
of gnome

all other desktops like twm icewm xfce i can change and get to correct desktop.

Go to a xfce session and create a new user account
Try logging in with that to Gnome

ok thats good idea.
i did not think of it.
i will get back to you tomorrow morning[my time IST]

thanks for fast reply.
