i created a wireless ad hoc network between two suse laptops
when i ping they respond to each other
but there is something i dont know wether it indicates something wrong or not
when i navigate to the destination “network” i only find the “network places” icon
and when i click on it it says to me “failed to mount files from server”,
shouldn’t i find the other box icon besdies the “network places” icon
and when i open firefox “default browser” and type “network:///-the other box ip-”
it shows me an error message saying "protocol program isn’t found " or something
is there something wrong with this network or this is normal?
and if there is anything wrong how can i fix it?
anybody plzzzzzz answer

Please do not use all caps unless you intend to shout, and if that’s the
case do not expect to get any answers except those you will not like.
SUSE has a default firewall protecting it from the evils of the world like
any sensible OS. Unless you have opened the ports required for SMB (the
protocol that I assume you’re after) then it’s not going to allow anybody
to reach out and talk to it like a poorly-designed operating system may.
Also, if you have not configured each box to have a share of the
appropriate type (again, assuming SMB, but that’s just an assumption that
hopefully you can clarify/confirm) then there will not even be a service
on the boxes to be found once the firewall allows access. Which steps
have you taken to enable the service, share, and firewall access?
Good luck.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER DOUBLE POST. BECAUSE YOU DID, I WILL NOT ANSWER EITHER!
suseTOMA, sorry to hear of your problem. You need to understand that here the openSUSE forums, it is best to post a question in only one place. If anyone knows the answer they will jump in and try to help. It seems like some users are two troubled to answer your questions or explain why you should not double post questions.
As to your problem, creating a wireless ad hoc network means you are connecting two computers directly together over the wireless network. Normally, this into itsself does not allow the two computers to do anything between them, no more than putting two computers into the same network switch would. Does one of them also connect to the internet using a wired connection? You would have to share something on each computer in order to see it on the other computer. And this is after you get wireless working properly with your computer hardware. I am kind of thinking you don’t know what you are trying to do, which does suggest the question. What are your wanting to do with these two computers?
Again, I am sorry for the negative responses from some of our other users. They mean well but seem to have a low tolerance with new user mistakes.

I feel annoyed that I can’t put my wide range of languages on stupid
Facebook. For example, I speak Sarcasm, fluently spoken and written,
and Various Forms of Geek…
In the assumption that I understand you want to mount certain (parts of) filesystems from one system on the other I want to point that NFS is the way to do this in Unix/Linux.
Between Unix/Linux and Microsoft OSs one uses SAMBA and of course this can also be used between Unix/Linux systems while it is a bit strange to do so imho.
In both caes one has to specify on one system what one wants to export and on the other what one wants to mount (and v.v. when that is needed). Not everything is automaticaly exported from every system to every other system on the base that they can ping each other. Would be a bit unsafe/embarrassing/… wouldn’t it?
And yes, firewalls have to allow the things that are to be alllowed.
sorry guys, im a newbie but im learning too
-i didn’t know that capital lettered title will bring as many replies as that :D-
anywayz,
-for those who want to knew the actual steps im doing to set up connection:
1-right click network manager
2-Edit connection
3-wireless tab, Add
4-mode–>ad hoc, set ipv4
5-repeat those steps on the client boxes but each with unique ip’s
-for those who want to know why im doing the connection, is that im trying to do
some parallel processing between two or more boxes
-for those who suggested samba, will it work for other os’s than suse
-and for those who knew the answer and didn’t help, just shut up
First about your double posting and stuck Caps Lock key. Nice you got the message about them. Do not forget we are all volunteers and try to help in our spare time without any reward apart from the fact that every now and then somebody says: “Thanks, that helped”. We also try to keep it a friendly place here. Therefore I am afraid that your last sentence above will not be very welcome with a lot of people. And thus the willingness to help you may decrease .
About your question.
Nobody here doubts that you succeeded in making your adhoc connection. You say that it works (both can ping each other) and we believe you. The fact that this is an adhoc connection is not of any further interest. When you have connection, you have it, adhoc, cabled, whatever.
You question was not about the connection, but about the usage of the files on one sytem by the other system. Is that correct?
You seem to think that when a network connection is available you then can do this without any further configuration about which system may use which part of the file system(s) of another system. This is not true. You must use some software (NFS, SAMBA, SSH, …) and that must be configured and started.
As i stated in an earlier post, SAMBA is designed for file sharing between Unix/Linux systems and MS systems. I hope this answers you but last sentence.
For SAMBA you can find usefull infi at openSUSE SuSE Linux HOWTOs and Tutorials by Swerdna.

Samba is the Linux version of microsoft’s network sharing software, written to allow resource sharing (e.g. files, printers) between windows and Linux machines.
