Is SOF Firmware needed?

This is what happened today on updating.

Installation of sof-firmware-1.6-1.1.noarch failed:
Error: Subprocess failed. Error: RPM failed: error: unpacking of archive failed on file
 /lib/firmware/intel/sof-tplg: cpio: File from package already exists as a directory in
 system

Searched for it, and found it here. Sound Open Firmware is an open source audio DSP firmware …
Is this needed?

I don’t know whether is needed. Presumably, it is for sound.

Uninistalll the package. Make sure that the directory no longer exists. Then install it again. That will probably take care of the problem.

Depends on your hardware. Possibly needed for sound output with Intel graphics (HDMI, DP).
