Is Pidgin a spammer?

Ppl on my msn list are complaining that they’re receiving spam from me, but I never did anything. I’ve been using pidgin (v. 2.1.1) on a openSuse 10.3 box and I swear that I never tried to spam anyone

Anyone has a clue of what is going on?

tks!

Nobody on my lists care… Pidgin is just an IM client. It doesn’t send
e-mail even as far as I know unless you installed a plugin or something
that does that.

Good luck.

Please verify that what they got was from your machine or not. Are they talking about junk emails received from you?

Hehe, Pidgin can’t spam. Advertisements about social/community sites aren’t made by Pidgin. They exists - go to the spam’s link (don’t enter your password nowhere, unless you will be also a spamer). Read the Term of Use - they can use your password to send advertisements.

What the heck is going on here. Literally tens of thousands of msn accounts get hacked, hijacked or whatever, and now Pidgin has done it? Come on, tell people to bother MSN for not taking care of security matters.

So: never, never let people tell you things like this. Ask M$ if your account might be hacked. It’s probably used by spammers to mask their own identity. And read, read, read. MSN just isn’t safe.

I had the same issue on one person on my messenger.

What happened is that they were socially engineered to enter a website and give their msn logon information in a 1:1 copy of the msn portal and thus their account was now used for spamming purposes due to the fact that you can have both a normal messenger connection and a mobile connection at the same time.

All the messages that I got from the person originated from a “Mobile” connection.

Changing your password fixes this issue.

Thank you very much, Chrysantine!

Just to get things clear, my friends complained that they were receiving MSN messages from me, not emails. But Spam nevertheless

I’ve changed my password and let us see what happens. Of course my subject title was ‘misleading’ but I was honestly confused, because it is almost 2 yrs since I last used my windows installation. So I really hadn’t a clue.

You ppl shouldn’t get that upset, I was not putting the blame on pidgin, was really trying to understand what is going on!

byeeeeeee!
