I tried to start translating http://opensuse-guide.org Contents to Persian for Iranian openSUSE beginners. but one of my friends told me that unfortunately openSUSE project is declining (it is dieing). he told me that in less than 9 months project leader and managers were changed three times; and he told me that the origin of this event goes back to acquisition of Novell by Attachmate Group.
after that i searched in google and found this page.
**
So, i want to ask, is it true? are openSUSE developers disappointed about it’s future? and finally, is openSUSE dieing? **

this should have been posted (if at all, that is) in a soapbox or chitchat
forum, not under “help.looking-for.”
the quoted article says absolutely nothing useful or interesting. and,
from where i stand, an outsider using openSUSE for a few years and keeping
track of forums & mailing lists, it looks very much alive to me. some
people may claim that openSUSE “died” when it made a deal with microsoft,
or the one re. novel, but that’s like claiming only catholics (or whatever
denomination) are alive.
re. developer’s happiness or lack thereof, you’ll have to ask them; don’t
think they’ll read your post here. what i know is that development is
going on, and i’m afraid that neither all users nor all developers will be
happy with all the changes (or lack thereof) that are happening – but
that, in my opinion, is a sign of ‘being alive.’

There are problems with the forum. At present, the forum is annoying and frustrating to use.
I haven’t seen problems elsewhere.

You should look who writes this page. Roy Schestowitz was one of the
driving forces of boycottnovell.
Now that Novell is no longer sponsor he seems to have a new hobby.

I’m not a techie, or an entrepreneur, but I do know everything, ebbs and flows. Kind of like market trends. If Suse declines it may, but it will come back. I’ll give you an example look at the up and down movement of Apple stocks. The thing I don’t like is the build up of “new” releases, such as only x amount of days till xyz will be released and its built up and built up some more its the latest and greatest, only to find out what that was, was it, nothing new. MS, and Apple do it all the time. Well the Linux community does it also Ubuntu is the biggest one for this that I know of. Then when Suse 12.1 came out it was hyped up, and for what? Ubuntu put those stupid Icons on the left hand side of the screen, I use Suse 11.4 so I can’t say what the difference is with 12.1, I’d bet money not a whole lot. I said all that to say this, if you don’t want to decline, keep the lid on the latest and greatest test it and re-test it. Make it a real “WOW” make it so as much as possible its bug free. Stay with simplicity. Make a huge leap to say release 15 from 12 but by golly it had better have something impressive, not just revamped. You want news, you’ll get it. You want an increase of users you’ll get that also. There is my 2 cents.

No, it’s not true. Projects (especially large projects) change leadership, sometimes regularly. Consider the source as well - this source seems to be the guy who ran boycottnovell, so he’s biased against anything SUSE because he’s got a “religious” hatred of Microsoft.
I don’t know any developers disappointed about its future. The fact that the SUSE business is hiring for the openSUSE Boosters team should tell you much more about the actual future of the project rather than someone who’s got a chip on his shoulder because of the Novell/MS agreement.
And lastly, no, openSUSE is not dying. It’s thriving.
Jim
One only has to look at the derivatives on the Download page to realise that openSUSE is not declining. What started as a single distro is now available in many versions thanks to the work of volunteers.
To which we add SUSE Studio, the Open Build Service, the activities and presence all over the world.
Jim can you move the rest of this thread also to chitchat?

NNTP users ! I made a mistake when moving this thread. Will merge the two threads in 10 minutes. Please refrain from posting.

I’d appreciate when you move a thread that you tell us, nntp users, that
you are moving it, and where to - I was tempted to post and I would have
done so at the wrong place.

Yes, the forum staff is aware, but it’s easy to forget for those who
don’t use NNTP. We’ve been over this before.

i’m wondering what you’re hoping to achieve with this question, here in
these forums?
i mean, if you go to an animal rights forum and ask if animals are really
that important, or to some republican website and ask if all this
obama-bashing wasn’t really a bit too much, what answer do you expect?
these are openSUSE forums where users try to help each other with their
problems, exchange news, etc. if we thought openSUSE was dead or dying, we
wouldn’t be here to begin with.

i really don’t understand what is wrong with you about this question?!
i think many people read this thread and only you gave such a answer.
as i mentioned in my question (and i really think you did not read my question complete), i want to start translating some document about openSUSE for Iranian beginners (it will be a good endeavor for promoting openSUSE and also Linux in my country) and because of my friend message about declining of openSUSE, i started this thread. i want to know about this issue because it is important and related to my decision; what is the advantage of translating so many documents and spending so many time for a dieing or declining distro?

i don’t know what is wrong with me either , but that’s a different
question.
if you are really concerned that openSUSE is declining & dying, an
openSUSE forum is not the place to find out about it. all of us here are
in some way predisposed towards openSUSE, we’re using it (more or less
happily), and work with it. to us, it’s not dead.
i don’t know exactly where, but there are places (websites) that attempt
to keep statistics, which distro has how many users, are the user no.s
going up or down, etc.
personally i don’t listen to people who try to tell me what’s what, with
their own personal motives & agendas. i am using openSUSE, i see that it’s
developing, there are new versions coming out, and things change. most
importantly, it works well for me, and i get help when i have problems.
you are using openSUSE yourself, aren’t you? if you think it’s a good
thing, openSUSE, then i would recommend that you go ahead and translate it
for others whose language isn’t yet available. it would enable them to use
the same thing, openSUSE. if YOU think openSUSE is dead or useless, then
don’t do it, since it would be a waste of time. on the other hand, if you
find openSUSE useful, your contribution would be a good thing, too.

Phani brings up a good point, though.
You wouldn’t go to a Ford dealership and ask them what kind of car you
should buy and expect them to say you should buy a Toyota.
Asking the openSUSE community “do you think you’re dying” or “do you
think the distro is dying” is along the same lines. If people are using
openSUSE, they clearly don’t think it’s dying, or they’d have moved to
something else.

OK, but i asked this question here to know how openSUSE users will defend against such a opinion about their lovely distro.
anyway, i will continue asking in another places …
and
sometimes i think openSUSE forum is not as friendly as for example Linux Mint forum.
You looking for a way out of doing something good for the Iranian community? I’m sure someone would find your contribution a valuable asset.
Depending on what statistic you want to look at, it is gaining users, or losing users.
In the last 7 days Linux Mint has declined more than openSUSE. Over the last year both have gained users.
