Is opensuse 12.3 compatible with lenovo y500?

I’ve made a liveusb for my y500, but I can’t get it to boot it for anything. I went into the bios and have “boot from usb” enabled. I was wondering if there were other bios settings that needed changing. The tutorial I read on the main documentation didn’t mention changing any bios options. So I had nowhere else to look. I’ve noticed that a lot of users have had trouble installing ubuntu, so maybe my lenovo y500 just isn’t compatible with linux distros? I’m a bit of a newbie with linux, so I have no way of knowing.

I was also wondering if creating a live cd/dvd would be a better option. would be a hassle to go buy, but if it has a higher chance of working, I’d definitely try it.

Thank You,

Reading here: Lenovo Ideapad Y500 [Linux Laptop Wiki] … I note that you could be looking at the laptop having a secure boot selected, there may be an EFI bios, and the partitioning could currently be setup for GPT. I hope within a month to obtain an EFI/GPT equipped laptop (a Toshiba) so I can’t add any advice other than to offer caution and to note carefully what is in the links that jdmcdaniel3 noted, and also what is in the linlap link that I provided.
