My System is a pre-configured gateway from 2004 … and I’m expeiriencing some lag on the net … any application I click on in the desktop is awfully slow in loading … I’ve been out of the technology branch for a while … I’m not very informed on new hardware anymore … but would anybody give me any suggestions on today’s top systems to own for home or office … what exactly has changed ???
Choose Xfce or LXDE for desktop environment.
Essentially RAM, CPU power and disk capacity got cheap so that even the entry level system will come with 1GB or more of memory. If money is not a problem for you (about $250+ will get you a pretty decent entry level desktop today), buying a new system (after verifying the hardware compatibility of the components with Linux) will get you going quickly. If that is out of the question, then scale down your expectations and use a lighter desktop or a lighter distro. What are the specs of your machine anyway? (RAM, CPU speed, disk capacity)
also which connection is best for heavy downloads ?? ADSL or Cable ? what speed is recommended???
512 of ram … (heh) 3.0 ghz intel pentium (P4) and 250 GB HD … would an upgrade of the current config help??
I’ve also been thinking about which OS is best suitable for today’s daily enchancements ! what is the deal with Apple Macs … ??
Your computer is not bad and just need to upgrade memory…

lag on the net or desktop could be because you need to disable or
uninstall beagle (in system and in firefox)…or because you need to
disable IPv6 in both…
steps to do both covered well by search of fora…

If you have the choice: cable. I see a lot of both of them, my own is cable 50Mb/sec, and that’s not the limit. Provider wants it to be 100Mb/sec in 2 years. Should make very heavy downloading no problem
wow … awesome system ! in your opinion has the AMD Athlon performance beat out the rivalry in processors ?? ex. intel ???
