Is it so friggin wrong to try out other distros???

This is my beef with this community right now, I am a multi distro user (an admitted distro hopper) and am trying to give OpenSuse and its community the benefit of the doubt but its hard to do when some people can be so rude.
I like Linux in general, no matter the distro or who makes that said distro I am a fan of linux as a whole and I try to keep open minded on other distros.
I use 4 operating systems in this house, this computer has a triple boot as I interchange between WinXP, OpenSuse and Ubuntu.
My setup is this, I am using Ubuntu for general computing, OpenSuse for about the same reasons though I am keeping it as a standby too just in case Ubuntu Jaunty does not live up to expectations, I also use WinXP for minor gaming and its there for my husband who uses windows for work (though he is becoming more comfortable with linux over time)
For him I gave a dualboot of Linux Mint and WinXP, I gave him Linux Mint for the simple reason it offered codecs and stuff like that preinstalled and he is still getting used to how to install packages and such.
He sort of sees me as some kind of computer whiz, really am not as I wont consider myself one until I build a computer of my own.
Anyhow my point is that here even mentioning Ubuntu is like I am swearing, I mean the language filter here is messed up enough when you write the word F Arther (sorry its the only way to write that word) the F A R T part of that word is edited out as the language filter is a little over sensitive but now it seems we must add Ubuntu to the bad words list too.
Look I use Ubuntu, I use OpenSuse, whats the harm in using more then one bloody distro!
Its all open source for crying out loud!

No one stops you from using Ubuntu or any other distro. The problem with mentioning Ubuntu here is that we often get Ubuntu threads (and trolls) that go way beyond the forum rules and it gets annoying. We had in the past threads about a guy who wanted to go advertise openSUSE on the Ubuntu forum and this specific thread just exploded. He wanted us all to support his efforts as he thought that this will make SUSE popular. I think you can see how wrong that is. For this reason (and others) we try to minimize such threads. Of course you can mention Ubuntu and start every now and then a thread, but keep it in check and try to minimize advertising of its better features. As you mentioned earlier, Ubuntu is a competitor to SUSE, but so is Slackware, Mint, Debian, Fedora, etc. No one comes here from the Slackware community, for example, and starts mentioning how Slack does things better than SUSE or not. Most of the regular visitiors are aware of the pro’s and con’s of SUSE and probably other distros

Simple answer: none. Where’s the problem?

I don’t see any problem. Many of us use multiple distros for work reasons or because we like variety. Some of use even use other OSes, shock horror. It’s no big deal and we don’t make a song and dance about it. Just ignore the hypersensitive people who are offended that another Linux distro even dares to exist.

A picture saves a thousand tearsrotfl!

Nice one!

Seriously, I multiboot with several other distros using a shared data partition. It provides for quick change - if forced or preference, and it allows me to determine what works or doesn’t work but should. Only difference is that my workhorse is openSUSE.

Apart from that the OP seems to be complaining about rudeness from the community. Don’t get mad, get even, or help, or counselling, or… just forget it - they will.

One addendum though.

Do the majority of openSUSE users really want to come here to read discussions on the merits or the disparagement of ubuntu or any other competing distro? I doubt it…

+1

Rational comparison is fine, but unfortunately that gets irrational quickly.

If you find a shortcoming in openSUSE, by all means file a bug report, discuss workarounds, or discuss ways fix the situation for future, but refrain from comparisons with other distros. We should aim to succeed by improvement, not by disparagement.

Really the main purpose of this forum is openSUSE support. Though sections of the forum ‘chit-chat’ and ‘soapbox’ allow room for a broader subject of discussion. The use of other Ditro’s cannot be wrong. It should IMO be encouraged as part of a wider learning experience. But we come here, to this forum, to support or look for support for openSUSE. Brief positive comments about another Distro should not be condemned.
You can understand however, openSUSE users becoming uppity if it turns in to a bit of a slagging off in favor of the ‘other’ Distro.

There is absolutely no problem in trying out other distros. Its all a matter of the user’s goals and preferences. Its part of Linux’s inherent beauty…the beauty of CHOICE. Granted, there are some distros that are “better” (to use a word) at some things than others. For example, Fedora Core…its design philosophy is to be always on the cutting edge…if you need or want the latest and greatest version of a package, chances are it is included somewhere in the Fedora repositories (the default repositories). Caveats? new code doesnt always turn out the way one would expect. Now lets look at Debian…an older distro that focuses on stability. Chances are its default repos will not include the “cutting edge, latest and greatest” versions of a package simply because that is not Debian’s design philosophy. Before anyone starts getting upset…I know you can get the latest and greatest in Debian and Fedora can be stable…Im simply pointing out the DESIGN PHILOSOPHIES. Other distros are designed for simplicity of use/configuration (i.e. suse and ubuntu) while some are designed to be completely and utterly customizable (i.e. Gentoo and Slackware).

We all drive different make and model cars (for those of use that drive). But in the end, all of them have an engine, brakes, wheels etc.

No matter what linux distro you use, in the end you will find: the linux kernel, the gnu toolchain, a shell…need I go on?

So we arrive at the beauty of choice again. the differences and similarities between distros are what makes linux special. Its never wrong to try or use another distro.

to the people critisize others for trying something new: Go install windows…then you wont have a choice…youll be stuck with whatever MS gives you…

enough ranting…bye!

Tara,
Don’t let a few morons that are barely maybe 1-2% of the forum members have you thinking that we have a hatred of other distros.
Check out a thread I started:
How many of you single, dual and/or multi boot? - openSUSE Forums

It tells a very different & I think the real story.
Finally. Love Chrysantine’s reply!

It’s just fine to try other distros!!!

Just don’t treat your marriage, professional, or serious relationships like one might try open source.

OpenSuSE will forgive and forget everytime.

You want an eye opener ? Admit to being an Ubuntu user on the Debian forum !

I’m new to openSUSE - but am really enjoying it.

You made it out alive after that comment on the Debian forums, stansaraczewski?

You’re lucky :stuck_out_tongue:

Ha - I’m fast.

That’s why I left after a brief stay last year. Too much hostility.

There is one thing which will get you more hostility and death threats faster than saying that Ubuntu is better than Debian.

Complain that there isn’t a working graphical installer in the Gentoo developer’s project forum. Suggest that a graphical Gentoo installer might assist in adoption of emerge and the whole idea of re-compiling everything from source code after you actually get a prototype system up and running without recompiling everything.

I assure you if you have an email address published any place in the Gentoo groups you’ll be getting viagra and enhancement spam for years.

I actually hope that someone at openSuSE can pick up the ball and move it forward on the idea of rebuilding everything from source code after you get that basic system up and running from the graphical installer. Pre-compiled binary packages are nice for that prototype build. Once it works let the system recompile from source code for a day.

I didn’t do anything like that, just asked questions and got beat up for that, or was asked silly questions to ‘find out what I meant’.

I’m just trying to have some fun with my pc.

Linux has it’s place as does Windows as does the Mainframe.

We can all get along… can’t we ?

No, I don’t think we can.

If the various Linux distributions were nuclear powers…

We’d have cleansed life from the surface of the Earth five times over.

That, unfortunately, is a measurable fact.

Microsoft and Apple would be running a colony on the Moon; billing the survivors for the quality of the air they breath.

Trying out other distros? Of course! And if you feel that the other distro is better for you just switch, or use dual boot. It’s all about free choices, nobody can control you.
I’m on Ubuntu at the moment. But I don’t want to be a troll.
(I used suse for 4 years, now I like Anakin Skywalker. :))
