is it just me.....

am i the only one who wishes they had not upgraded to kde 12.1 ?

i’m not linux competent, but i had my kde 11.4 install working just fine without much effort. in fact, i really really liked it to all other distro’s

i decided on a fresh install of 12.1 and the sound/audio is awful (e.g. distorted, mixer settings make no sense), the graphics/screen redraw performance is poor (e.g. flicker, stutter).
none of these things i experienced on 11.4.

all the claims about a great new version and i feel really let down. yeah i know its bad form to just come out and shout it down in first few days and especially given most linux folk like to meddle to get things right. i’m just talking from an average user point of view and working out of the box…it doesn’t work as well as 11.4 did on my computer hardware (AMD phenom x4 based, on board sound and graphics [hd3200 i think, yep pretty low spec], 4gig ram etc).

oh well rant over…what to do next…go back to 11.4 or see if things improve and spend hours i dont have these days trying to ‘fix’ it.

rant over… back to the guitar

There is no kde 12.1 nor kde 11.4.

I’m sure there are others (I assume you mean opensuse 12.1).

If you are relatively new to linux, it’s best to wait a while and let the dust settle before upgrading to a newer version, particularly if you are happy with what you have. Okay, it’s a bit late for that advice now.

ey up folks, thanks for the replies. i though you were all very polite in reply

well i did write my post after 4 hours of head scratching and reading up etc. so i was a bit head frazzled.
thanks for the correction; i did mean opensuse 12.1 ooops.

now then, i have started again after some guitar playing, a few beers etc. feel its not as bad as thought and as one of you allude to, once dust settles i’m sure it will start to iron out.
to be honest, i do like to delve into the system workings - not at any wizard level mind. it was just at the time i really should have done as advised by you and taken more care to not trash a working system for a new release!! ooops again.

apart from a few glitches i’m spotting, the most annoying issue is the window drawing performance: when i startup an app or what have you (most of them but its worse on amarok that ive noticed so far) , on drawing the window it stutters and flickers - or does it in blocks, all be it fairly rapidly.

my m/board has HD3200 onboard graphics i believe - poor, but suse 11.4 (with kde 4 ??) was fine. i’ve switched down to ‘high cpu/low graphics’ and even tried ATI proprietary driver but that didn’t make any noticeable difference. i’ll keep pressing on. thanks again.

easy now.
