Is alternative for nVIDIA graphic card installation correct?

I am new to Suse Linux. So please excuse me for this “funny” query.
I have read the threads:
Configuring graphics cards in openSUSE 11.3

From here I went to this page:

Its mentioned on this page that: Upon installing openSUSE, the X system’s automatic configuration may have failed to properly configure the graphics correctly. Typically this results in either a black screen upon reboot, or the wrong resolution being displayed on the monitor.

I have none of these problems. But after searching for inability of desktop effects to become activated, I found that nVIDIA graphic card drivers are must for these effects.

After clicking “My computer” icon on desktop, I found Display Info as following:
Vendor: nVidia Corporation
Model: G98 [GeForce 8400 GS]
2D driver: nouveau
3D driver: nouveau Gallium (7.8.2)

Can anyone tell me ‘Is nouveau an alternative for nVIDIA’? Is this the reason for no wrong resolution or black screen upon boot. That means my computer graphics are working correctly.
Then why does Desktop Effects are not getting enabled…

Please help me in doing so…

After searching for Kaffeine media player extra codecs to play media files, I incidentally found the following options:
I opened Yast Control Center @ linux-o26a
Software> Add on Products > installed Add-On Products > Community Repositories > clicking Next, this opened a window with “List of Online repositories” where there is an option of
“NVIDIA Repository”.

If I install it, will it enable the “Desktop effects”

I once again apologize for asking this query here.
Please help me in enabling Desktop effects in Suse 11.3 KDE.

But it doesn’t support desktop effects - yet

Thanks a lot.
One more query, if I install NVIDIA on my system, which already has nouveau installed on it, can it create any conflict between the two.
Should I uninstall nouveau first before installing NVIDIA.? And if so, please tell the procedure to uninstall nouveau.
(I have found one more page describing NVIDIA installation:

but I am going to follow the instructions as described by caf4926)

Follow the guide and it will take care of the nouveau driver.
Some users actually uninstall it after getting nvidia in place

Thanks for the guide, illustration images make it very easy to understand for new comer to openSUSE and KDE like me.
I installed driver for nvidia GeForce 6100 with no problems.

Not when you have it installed via the repo, no.

Hi, I have a bit of a problem with the proprietary nvidia driver which I installed as a binary on suse 11.3,
when I run the nvidia-settings gui it does not give any widescreen display modes as options.

My monitor is an Acer x193w which will do 1440x900 but there is no option for that.

The monitor is just listed as a generic CRT.

My card is a PNY Geforce 6200 AGP 512MB.

Yours is a different and very specific problem. We have user’s who are pretty good at solving this, but it is VERY UNLIKELY they will find your post buried at the bottom of someone else’s thread. I recommend you start your own thread with an appropriate title. Something like "proprietary nvidia driver resolution inappropriate on openSUSE-11.3 GeForce 6200 w/Acer x193 w/monitor " or something like that.
