Is ALSA really the best there is?

Is it possible that there is something better than ALSA, or maybe tools available so I can get decent sound out of my laptop? My laptop has 4 harmon kardon speakers, plus a subwoofer, but I don’t get even half of the rich sound from them when Windows was installed. Every thing related to ALSA is installed, yet nothing gives me good sound, neither do the setting in Amarok and Xine.

Am I missing something?

Are You using ALSA or PULSE AUDIO?

I am using ALSA.

Well ALSA is best in my opinion, most people use Pulse Audio but i don’t recommend it anymore. I’m not really a sound freak so can’t really tell but i think there is some real time audio or something?

You quite possibly ARE missing something. However it may not be trivial.

Some openSUSE sound concepts are here:

Users with advanced hardware, on occasion need to create custom alsa configurations, where such configurations are typically not setup by default with any Linux distribution. For example, users can create a custom .asoundrc file to help get the most out of more advanced hardware.

My hardware is basic (and old, like me) and hence I have never learned about the implementation details of such hardware. But it can be done. However the users who succeed with this, also do not want to take the time to write how-to’s nor guides, and hence the information is rarely passed on.
