Then you can fire up gtkpod and select your model and start uploading music. I have tested this on 11.2 and 11.3 on different computers with both jail broke and non jail broken iPhone 3GS with new and older bootroms running IOS4.
Hope this helps others as I went nuts trying to make sense of the sporadic posts all over the google.
I have an iphone 4, the above instructions worked wonderfully to get my device recognized on the system.
GTKpod see’s my iphone. However Iphone 4 is not in the model list.
Further investigations lead me to understand that Iphone 4 and/or ipad is not yet supported with this method.
Do us iphone 4 folks have no other alternatives? I dont want to have to run a windows VM just for the sake of the phone sync.

contact Apple and ask them when they will release their Linux app
allowing you to manage your iPhone…
or, just ask them to give you all the API hooks so a Linux programmer
can program the interface…

yep…yet iPhone users will continue to grip, moan and groan that they
can’t interact with their iPhone unless they use something that cost
an arm and a leg!!

androids are VERY well accepted here, mostly due to the lessor cost of
the unit itself…
personally, i just have an old hand-me-down mobile phone…it has a
screen about the size of a postage stamp, but it IS in color!

I have upgraded to 11.4, which I absolutely love!!!rotfl! Stable and fast!!! The issue I had until today:’( was with usbmuxd, I tried to update all the files “apurc719” posted from this repo ( http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home://FunkyM://iphone/ )---------(they worked for me on 11.3 with my jailbroken IPod touch 3rd Gen. iOS 4.01) but to no avail. I then tried to update usbmuxd without finding any new versions until today, but today I found a new version using $ sudo zypper install usbmuxd.
I upgraded it and it works again. I only use it with Gtkpod though so I don’t know with Amarok or others.
Thanks again to all guys around for the constant effort to keep Linux ahead!!!
Hi everybody, sorry to drag up a year-old thread, but I’m having trouble getting my iPhone to even be recognised by my machine- after installing the dependencies and following the instructions in the OP, nothing happens.
ifuse gives the following error message: “Failed to connect to lockdownd service on the device. Try again. If it still fails try rebooting your device.” I attempted to connect again- same message. I restarted my iPhone- no dice. Tried again with different USB cable- same message.
The only thing I could think of is that Apple have closed down iOS 5 (I’m running v5.1.1) to prevent anything other than iTunes connecting with an iDevice, which seems a little unfair. If that’s the case, is anybody aware of a workaround? I did a quick google, but didn’t turn up anything that looked of any use, and would prefer not to jailbreak my phone if at all possible.
Possibly related stuff- I am running openSUSE 12.1 on an HP ProBook, with GNOME 3.2 as my window manager, and am therefore using Banshee as my music player. I guessed that that will not make much difference, as the problem appears to be between the USB connection and the OS, since the phone is charging merrily away. Come to think of it, it might be a driver problem.
