I am looking for a computer that is in my office network, yet I cannot find it. I’d like to share files and back it up on mine.
How can I search for its IP?

I am a new Open SUSE 11:0 user, with KDE 3.5.9 “release 49.1”
Linux 2.6.25.16-0.1-pae i686 machine…
How will you know when you have found it? Any identifying characteristics, like colour of hair, height? No, seriously, you say you want to share files with it. That implies you believe it exists and that you must have some instructions on how to connect to it, even if the instructions don’t mention the IP address. So what are they?
these are two computers in my room, linked by a lan network cable, but I am only a geek and do not know where to find for them…
Which is the program I have to install to support this exchange of files?
Simply, am new to this system. It was so obvious with Microsoft, you just searched for a computer and put the name or IP in the search line… Is it here anything similar?Isuppose drastically yes, but my colleague here who made me convert to Open Source is out of office!
:shame:
Ah, but you said office a moment ago.
Anyway you should have said sharing files with Windows the first time. The answer is Samba. Look for posts by swerdna, he’s written up a tutorial on this I believe and the link should be in his signature.
You see, you shouldn’t assume the answer before you ask the question. The thing is, Windows file sharing (or CIFS, to give its official name) doesn’t rely on the user knowing the IP address. Sure, it still uses Internet Protocols, but the way the names are resolved, doesn’t require any DNS nameserver. CIFS has its own name resolution mechanisms.
on a linux computer open the terminal and type:
/sbin/ifconfig | grep inet
thanks, so I know about my IP, but this is interesting but does not solve my puzzle:
I would like to link two PCs via local network, I think the SAMBAis my next dance, but first I’ll study more on it… Let’s hope I’ll manage to!
Thanks for the support, then, and have a nice week end
rotfl!
Yep, samba is the name. Look for swerdna he is a good samba instructor.
You will learn his SAMBA dance techniques in a short period of time and windows will be reachable via the swaying cable.lol!
