Under /boot/grub there are two files, menu.lst.old and menu.lst.
In menu.lst.old are all the entries I would expect to see but in menu.lst there is nothing.
There is an choice listed when I boot which I would like to remove so how do I edit the menu.lst
Has opensuse gone to Grub2

What about YaST > System > Bootloader? Does it also show nothing?
If “menu.lst” is empty, you have a problem. Perhaps you edited it with yast, and messed up. In that case, it might be best to rename or copy “menu.lst.old” back to “menu.lst” - provided that you have the kernel(s) used in that file.

Deleted the entry for windows 2
Boot menu screen now shows opensuse 11.4

computer boots ok in both linux and windows. still can’t understand why menu.lst to edit. will wait and see if it continues to work without this.
Yes, I had guessed I had a problem but obviously not using menu.lst to boot. have things working as I wanted thanks to other reply. I don’t think the usability of openSuse has improved with age.

I see a blank menu.lst if you open it with a text editor without being ‘su’
Maybe you tried opening it like the above.
Eureka!! That is exactly what I’d done. So I went to command line then su > vi boot/grub/menu.lst and there was the contents of the file with the edits I’d done in yast>system>bootloader.
Thanks for your help. Next time I see an “Empty” file I’ll look as su.
Also a bit my fault, I of course assumed(!) that you, as system manager, would use things like cat and vi to look in such files, or, as noob, would use YaST to do system management 
I can however recommend to use YaST when possible, it will spare you a lot of problems.
And please use su - instead of su when you need to be root (or any other user).

for any nntp users, hcvv is correct in writting
use su - instead of su
it is an unfortunate side effect of blending together an http and nntp
forum together that causes what he wrote in italics to come through in
nnep as:
-su -- or -su-
which is unusable in every case…
note: this http>nntp “bug” is not likely to be repaired…which is ok…
